A4 Cab advice

Afternoon all,

I'm in the market for a 08/09 A4 cab, with a manual box and either the 2.0 TFSi or 2.0 TDi with about 40-50k on the clock. Is there anything I should be looking out for when test driving and are there any extras that are must haves?

hi mate your best bet is to look up common problems with the 2.0 tfsi and 2.0 tdi engines cos they ll all be the same.
ive got a 2.0 tdi cab and its a good car had not one problem yet touch wood. ive heard the bad things with the 2.0tdi is the turbos are prone to sticking and also DPF's are a nightmare but they should be fine because it should still be under warrenty for the milage your after. not really sure about the tfsi's my mate has got a leon cupra and thats the same engine and hes's never had problems, i guess long has its had a good owner and been serviced you ll be fine
 
I looked at a 2.0tdi cab a month ago and in the end the sale fell through due to a problem with the injectors. Apparently this is a common fault on the 2.0tdi so check for rough idles and that the car pulls well, as a new injector alone is £500+

How did you find out about the injectors problem, just from rough idle or an inspection?

I noticed a rough idle when I test drove it, agreed with the dealer that he would get it sorted as part of the service before I handed over the cash. When the garage (Audi specialist) investigated the problem they found a faulty injector. The injector was replaced but some unspecified electrical fault meant the car wouldn't run properly after being at an auto-electrician's for a week.

From researching on various forums it seems to be the general concensus that this is a relatively common fault and it's due solely to poor injector design. Audi have been known to replace the injectors under warranty (providing Audi FSH) but you have to argue your case to get the work done, some had had sucess, some have not. Unfortunately there appears to be no way to anticipate an injector is close to failing and just something that you risk with that engine. I opted for the 3.0tdi in the end as apparently they use different injectors.

Having said that lots of people have had years of trouble-free motoring with the 2.0tdi, and with the mileage you're looking at hopefully you will dodge any costly repairs...

Not trying to put you off or scare you, but this is what I found out when I researched it.
 
think the faulty injectors are just with the 170bhp not the 140 bhp, also definitely recommend the bose system if you can get it
 
The 2.0TFSi is a really good strong engine, i have one in my saloon, very refined and smoother compared to my old 20v turbo. We have a 170 tdi in a 57 touran, that does not have the pace of my petrol, but is good on fuel, sounds horrible though, I'd imagine in a cab is sounds even worse. My mum has had an S4 cab from new since 2004, other than the roof playing up once we have never had an issue with it. In terms of extras bi-xenon lights are nice, so in the sat nav, my favourite has to be cruise control, quattro is a must have too really.
 
I've tested the TFSi engine in a cab, it is nice and so quiet too, but I just don't think I'll get the mpg I need. Work will only pay 21p per mile for business use and I think the TFSi will leave me a few pence short. I'm testing a 2.0 diesel cab at the weekend, I just hope It doesn't sound like a tractor, I've really got my mind set on one now!

As for toys, I'm planning on getting a final edition so it should have everything I need, although it puzzles me why Audi don't include heated seats as standard?
 
I've got an A4 cab (08) 2.0tdi s line(140bhp), had it 2 years its now its got about 43k on the clock, its been fine. only issue was clutch/dmf changed at 30k under warranty. with reference to the mpg, i'm not sure what ur expecting out of the diesel mines averaged 39.8mpg over the last 10k, on a motorway run it returns 45mpg - ish. as for noise, I never notice tbh, I've took the 2.0tdi badge off the back and when the roofs down the radio is normally up.

The one I was looking at was a 140, which did have injector issues. Don't know for sure if they use the same injectors though. And I agree about the bose... but the cab I got didn't have it in the end and the standard is definately acceptable, but I will be upgrading it at some point.

The 2.0tdi IMO is a bit loud at idle, but it's a pretty standard diesel engine so you can expect as much. I worked it out to be a trade off between slightly better performance and quieter engine (2.0TFSI), against better MPG & a noise you only have to put up with when waiting at the lights...

On a side note, something which I didn't realise at first (if you're looking for an s-line), is that not all S-lines have the same exterior spec... 'arnoldlog' has the 'standard' s-line front bumper from his pic (same as me), but there is a nicer one with a deeper fin at the bottom. If you saw the two side-by-side you would definately see the difference but there seems to be no indication in used car ads about that part of the spec, you've just got to look carefully at the pictures...
 
That’s a really nice looking car, you must have a smile on your face when sun is shining! I can't imagine that the B8 A4 cab (whenever they release it) will come close to the B7, in terms of looks.

The MPG figures are about right for me, much better than what I would get from a TFSI. What about the 140 engine, is it enough to be pulling the car around? I appreciate that the cab is more of a cruiser than a racer, but I was thinking of getting a remap just for more pull on the motorway.
 
Had mine two years now, I decided to get the 2.0tdi after much research and I don't regret it one bit. Mpg wise the cab will never be as good as a saloon but I managed a road trip from house to chamonix (800 miles) on one tank, home use it get about 40mpg average, you can get it mapped for better results
Road noise is minimal with the roof up.i don't think the idle is to loud as for the injector fault the 140bhp are not affected and I speak from experience after I booked mine in for investigation.
