    What to look for 3.0tdi

    Hi all,

    Thinking of buying a 3.0 tdi are there any common faults / issues I should look for?

    If you go for the B7 take a look at the intake manifold mechanisms and motors, these are becoming more of a common fault on this car.
    If they go wrong or need repairing..... its serious money.

    I did actually look at one that had this fault repaired at Audi, they said only Audi could do it?

    Is there any warning signs effects to look for?

    With my 3.0 litre tdi, i just used vcds i purchased.... and did a full scan.
    With regards to only audi carrying out this repair..... well i have repaired 1 bank on my car, it just meant swapping the motors from one side to another,(they are the same, although 1 is turned 90 degrees to the other), but i still have one bank not working, so i beleive unless others can give a good reason, this job can be done by anyone with an ounce of common sense.
    The only thing audi have... which you may not have is vcds or equivalant to turn off the fault, but this can sometimes be done by a sympathetic forum member.

    Another way of checking the inlet manifolds is to remove the engine cover have someone turn the ignition (it doesn't need to be started), and watch the manifolds carry out their sweep test, although this won't specify wheather their 100%, a lot of the problems stemming from these manifolds and motors are to do with the linkage arms.

    These are the problems i had when both banks had failed, sometimes the MIL light would throw..... very annoying, in my opinion no increase in fuel, no decrease in power.
    Now 1 bank is working, no MIL light since fixing, (3 months ago), and again no effect on fuel or power.
    I,m slightly baffled by no reading from vcds on the bank thats not working, but it must be the motor still runs, i can see that clearly, its just not connected to the flap assembly due to it shearing off previously..... so its my guess vcds looks for the motor sweep test when talking to the cars diagnostic software, hence satisfying it that everythings ok.
    I have just had a second MOT since the problem surfaced and this problem as no bearing on the smoketest results

    So what is the function of these flaps if the car runs ok with them not functioning or only partially functioning?

    I might be wrong on this, but i think the operation of the flaps work like this, put your foot down hard, like kicking down on an automatic, flap closes, more fuel delivered to the engine.... hey presto, more initial power. But i can also say, having driven my mates 3.0 litre tdi, mine seems perfectly ok.... even with one not operating... i would go as far as saying, the power difference is very small indeed if recordable,
    My car still drives like a bat out of hell, no probs.... even pulls a family size touring caravan as if its not there, still the best car i have ever owned in 30 years.

    Yes, one side does low down power, other side does high up. When mine failed car would accelerate like hell, then just stop at 3K revs.
    £500 to fix!
