Audi A4 Avant B7 - Cruise Control not working

Hi All

My father has a Audi A4 Avant B7 and the cruise control is failing to engage.

It would appear to be either the clutch/brake switch or the main stalk, is there any easy way of checking the switches?

The car is still under used warranty from a specialist but they are about 1hr30 away and would be far easier to check the fault and get them to send the correct part down for fitment.

If it was a dodgy brake switch then surely the brake lights wouldn't engage (which it does), thus more likely to be a clutch or stalk issue?

As Dave said, it'll most certainly be the clutch switch. Easy and cheap fix; around £12 from dealers.

Fitting is simples:

- Unplug Black plug from clutch switch
- Engage clutch and while engaged twist clutch switch 90degrees, cant remember which direction but it'll only turn in one direction.
- Switch can now be pulled out
 
This happened on mine when it was new, and the dealer said they had to change a chip or something like that. I know the steering wheel had to come off as i had to go back to get something I needed out of the car after a few minutes.
 
could be one of several problems, needs checking on the diagnostics rather than randomly replacing stuff....
 
unplug the clutch switch
run a wire across the connection if cruise works theres your problem
could be brake switch but more offen that not either lights stay on on wont come on
 
Had this happen to mine recently. Was definitely the clutch switch. You can also test by seeing if the revs are slow to fall when depressing the clutch when changing up gears. Mine actually rose about 200rpm when i pressed the clutch down before slowly falling back. Only takes 20 mins to change even for a novice.
 
I have a generic OBD2 cable(not KKL) that should be able to read some basic info, will try this first and see if any faults are flagged.

If not will do as mentioned above about pulling the clutch switch off and joining the connectors.

Ok got the clutch switch and refitted today after reading online

(Remove switch, depress clutch, push in new switch being careful not to touch the end and clockwise back into place, bring clutch back in slowly and pull up slightly to properly engage)

And it still doesn't seem to work :( Having never used the VAG CC system before, should the CC light come on once the stalk is in it's pulled back position (towards the driver?)

Hopefully getting hold of a friends VAG com soon...

No the light is only on when cc is in use ie the button on the end of the stalk is pressed, it may just need recoding.

Thanks, definitely not working.

Pull the switch in it's closest to driver position, press the button for a short while and nothing :(

Tried my friends VAGCOM but his was the non-canbus version, so no good either.

Could I completely eliminate the clutch switch by joining the connectors of the cable going into the clutch switch with some wire. Therefore tricking the system into thinking there is a working clutch switch (if the fault is still there then I know the clutch switch definitely isn't duff, otherwise if it works something wrong with the new switch?)
 
An update on this one

Eventually got it working, seems the install instructions floating around the net are now invalid.

Apparently there was a replacement switch made in Malta to replace the original and that design required that you fitted the switch with the clutch depressed, the very latest switches (also made in Malta) you leave the pedal in position, do a quarter turn clockwise to lock in and then plug back in.

Hey presto, it works!
 
Hi all,
I found my cruise control not working last week and today I did a bit of troubleshooting and found the switch damaged inside. Two years ago I did a minor fix on the switch and it kept working until last week.
If anyone else needs to test/replace it here's some info (hopefully use full):
1. Take down the cover under the steering wheel (hold in place by 2 screws in the lower part and 1 screw in the fuse box (left side to the steering wheel).
2. There are 2 switches on a metal plate between the clutch and brake pedal)
3. Disconnect the wire connector, press the clutch and turn the switch to release it from the holder
4. Switch can be tested using a voltmeter or a battery+wires+light bulb
5. If the switch doesn't have some major damage, it can be opened, cleaned and reused

6. Replace the switch with the part number: 8E0 927 189B or any of the OE numbers found here. It costs about 18USD.

I hope it helps.
