So i just cleaned my EGR....

The difference its made is amazing, no lumpy idle at traffic lights, plus it feels as if the turbo is spooling earlier, alot more urgency to the engine. Going to be sleeping with semi carbon black hands tonight, but trust me, it was worth it!

I was a bit puzzled at first due to trying to follow the guide, as mine is a 1.9tdi the layout was slightly different, and much easier to do. All it involves is 3 allen key bolt removal, a small screw driver, a whole can of wynns carb cleaner from halfrauds, a toothbrush, 45 mins scrubbing and voila, like new egr valve all shiny and ****. Btw, make sure u replace the rubber gasket on the end of the egr!. Will post pics as soon as i figure out how to!

Ordered myself some of this BG244 a few hours ago. I've heard very good things about it.
And after reading this article I had to try it:

How many miles are you at, its not a long job, have a look at the guide, all together will cost £13 in parts ( gaskets and carb cleaner).

Going to have a go at mine in the near future, save an hours labour at the garage.
I see the bolts are the torx type, these are notorious at stripping if tight or over tightened, do they need torquing, surely just hand tight with a socket set would be sufficient as there are gaskets?

Did ours over xmas, the picture guide that has been suggested was really useful. It was lumpy at idle, jerky at 2000 rpm in second and felt generally restricted. After cleaning the EGR the jerkyness dissapeared and the lumpy idle much improved. The EGR and the anti-shudder valve was proper caked up in tar - the EGR i would say was 50% closed up.I wouldn't know if mine was particularly bad or not but i was pretty shocked at the state of it. The inlet manifod is just as bad but as i didn't have a gasket at the time i left it for now, with a view to removing it for a clean out in the early spring. For anyone looking at doing it,check the condition/security of the small flap inside,i believe this has a tendancy to work loose and fall into the engine...I think i will make cleaning the EGR a semi-regular thing. I went for the Carb Cleaner option coupled with an old toothbrush as Wrath suggests,i always use it for this kind of job,it is brilliant stuff.

My car has only done 65k and it had a little bit of carb buildup but not much. Looked at the EGR on a newer Leon with similar miles and it had a very thick coating of carbon. I actually thought the metal had been stained until I pushed a screwdriver in, there was 3 mm of buildup. Funny really as the service guy at the Seat dealership questioned whether you ever need to clear it....yes....it should be regular.

Cleaned mine today, the cars an unmodified 56 plate 170, fsh, just coming upto to 55k miles.
Ive had her since 27k miles, ran her on Tesco diesel and had the injector failure in Nov 2010.
Had the work done, audi coughed up eventually etc and i now run her on branded, mainly Esso diesel.
When i remember i put a shot of Redex in the tank but ive had no real issues with the ways she has been running but due to a change in personal circumstances i wil be keeping the car so figured prevention is better than cure.
She is due a full service, cambelt and water pump in the next month so have saved myself an hours labour by not asking the garage to do it.

    One very dirty EGR....

I bet it was relieving to clear out all that carbon? I was kind of disappointed mine was pretty clean.

Not having seen the inside of the egr b4 i had no idea of its internal profile. I actually thought that some of the inner profile was from the machining until I stuck a knife in it, it must have been 8mm thick in places.
Satisfying to know that I have almost certainly save myself money as it would have eventually failed with that buildup

I stuck my fingers through the opening into the manifold, it's was caked in there as well, scooped out what I could by hand, wish I was more of a skilled mechanic as I would have had that off as well!

    A good mornings work though!

Cleaned the egr today took about an hour needed to undo a few extra bolts but managed it not to dirty but still used the full can of wynns carb cleaner lumpy idle seems better it was always flat in first seems slightly better after the clean

The bolts on the Egr cooler pipe where T50 heads and the Egr bolts where T30 heads

And another one with nice carbon filled nails

Hi guys, slightly off, but i put a can of BG244 into my 2.0 TDI after reading great reviews, i can confirm in my case that after a few hundred miles, my idle and smoothness of the engine were noticable, also i dont seem to get the odd puff of the black smoke associated with our cars, so its a good £20 as far as i can see

been having a few issues with my 2006 2.0 tdi 140 regarding the egr! car runs lumpy at idle, it hissers at high revs and ive found alot of soot around the egr valve! the car has coverd 140k miles. i have it booked in so i might just ask my mecanic to take it apart and clean it? providing theres no damage causing the soot to leak out to the engine bay?

    Why not remove it?

Having said that I can't seem to find conclusive proof that its a benefit.

    Would like to know though
