hi all

i have a b7 a4 2.0tdi multitronic sline in silver (previously owned a3 8p 3.2) which i have recently purchased.

i have just bought some genuine xenons including ballast and bulbs off a 2006 3.0tdi thinking that i will change my normal halogen headlamps but after taking it to my local audi specialist he is saying that there would be quite a lot of work needed to put them on my car, i.e

washer jets (will fail mot without them)
sensors on suspension
new adapter/harness
new coding

the guy i bought the lights from said all i would have to do is plug n play! which i have found out its not the case :(

is there an experienced garage around the east mids that knows what they are doing and can take care of this for me? as i am not too clever on this type of thing.

or is it not worth the hassle?

i have seen some drl/hid headlamps on ebay and look quite nice they ARE plug n play see below

what do you think?????

thanks

You'll need a wiring harness first, best place is Kufatec. All cars sold with xenons in the UK have to have washer jets and there is current speculation that cars retrofitted with xenons and no washer jets will fail the new-style MOTs. Putting washer jets in is a pain and think only a handful of people have done it.

Hi, so other than the wiring harness is there anything else need?

I don't think I have bi xenons, they are just normal ones. Would I need to code or apply sensors to the suspension or anything??

ahh okej i thought u wanted to use Devil eyes like i did before my xenon conversion :D
i can gladly help my m8 :D

You need to have a Kufatec cable that you plug the cable from your halogen to xenon, and you need to encode with VAG to xenon before you start using the lights.

Kufatec cable:

VAG code you need to change:
Original halogen that I had was the code 01012 here in Sweden, i think GB has the same
and change it to 01021
so that both HI and Low beams work :)

Details how to connect Kufatec cables:

Info about the VAG Code.

And if you dont know how to remove the from spoiler, read this :D
B7 A4/S4: Clear Corner Mod/Removal of Bumper

And if you dont have the VAG Cable you can get it here:

1: Plug the headlights on.
2: Plug Kufatec the cable as it says on the thread I linked to.
3: Modify the code 01012 to 01021 the that the Xenon lights work.
4: Now connect the Kufatec cable with the headlights, and ure done :D

took me about 30 min but i allready knew what to do, the first time took me 2 hours.

I hope this helped :D Good luck m8 and inform me when ure done :D

Thanks lenti for the the detailed info, but After looking into this more thoroughly I think it's probably not worth all the hassle specially with putting washers on as the new law states all xenons must have washers or it will fail the mot!!

Anyway if anybody is after some oem xenons drop me a msg!

don't worry you can change them when you do the mot, so when u have done this 1 time ull se that it will be so easy :D i have washers on mine but you also need automatic level control.
if you have S-Line you should have the washers on yours, i got it on mine..

I have s line but no washers! If anyone knows how to do it around the east mids then I would gladly come down and have it done , I have spoken to a few garages but they say they wouldn't want to take the job on ;(

why do you worry so much about the washers when you do the mot or the car inspection how we in sweden say. you just change back the headlights to normal ones and disconnect the kufatec and plug the original cable on when the mot is done you just change back to the bixenon and back with the cable and ure done :D

you dont even need to put back the screws...

Im verry happy with Bluefin, but i got more HP beacuse ive done some more mods with the engine like Custommade 3" exhaust with racecat and the turbo charges much earlier now than original..

Here's a quote from the new MOT Inspection Manual:

"Vehicles equipped with High Intensity Discharge (HID) or LED dipped beam headlamps may be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspension or headlamp self levelling system."

Note the word MAY, so the new MOT test will NOT automatically fail a vehicle with HID lamps that does not have headlight washers.

Hi Dave,

Are you sure these guidelines are from 2012 ? As every garage I have spoke to said the new change has only taken effect from Jan 2012

Hi Dave,

Yes, I downloaded them directly from the VOSA website. Here's the ISBN and copyright details:

"Fourth Edition crown copyright 2011
ISBN 978-0-9549352-5-2"

Here's the link MOT Documentation Contents Page

why do you worry so much about the washers when you do the mot or the car inspection how we in sweden say..

Because if he gets pulled by Vosa, then he stands to potentially get a nice fine or car taken of the road, also consideration of other road users, as xenons, although I swear by, if not setup with levelling can be very distracting when coming towards you, to the point of causing blinding temporarily, hence accident possibly & the levelling & washer system will allow him to have the light directed correctly on the road when fully laden in the boot & also the clarity from the washer system when used of course.

The whole issue of retrofitting Xenons should have been sorted out by the 2012 MOT test update, but it wasn't.

The Construction & Use Regulations specify that if Xenons are fitted then the vehicle MUST have both auto-levelling and headlamp washers. BUT, even with the 2012 update the MOT test doesn't require either of those (as you can see in the links above it just says those "may" be fitted, and if they are they are now checked which they were not previously).

So it IS still possible to pass an MOT test with retrofitted Xenons without self-levelling or headlamp washers even though this is in contravention of the Construction & Use Regulations. This is a stupid situation IMHO...
