Ok so had an oil change done at my mates garage today and when he was changing the filter noticed a puddle of oil. It looks like its coming from some kind of accentuator ??? or something along thoses lines, I have attached pictures with the item in question circled.

But he doesn't believe any oil should be going through this part at all. Any ideas anyone.

There are no circles on the photos so difficult to see what you are asking. the item appears to be the EGR valve that is attached to the egr cooler and change over valve. egr system creates black sooty gunk but not usually oil. my guess is the oil was spilt during the removal of the filter or oil fill. Is the car using oil? what mileage has it done? does it use water? the oil cooler is in there as well i think, so any signs of oil / water contamination?

There is a green circle on pic 1 right in the centre of the pic, although looking at it again not that easy to make out.

Basically the car has done 74000 miles, is not using oil or water, and no oil was spilled when filter changed or when oil filled as I was watching.

In the 2nd picture the part in the very centre is where the oil was sitting underneath that and some had gone onto the top of the oil cooler, and it seemed like there was oil coming from the bottom of that piece.

To be fair mate, that's not the cleanest engine so it could be anything. The best bet is to clean it all it up, run it for a few hundred miles and check again. If its not using oil, it doesnt have a leak.
