Excessive soot / smoke on acceleration, possible causes?

I have a 2006 2.0tdi sline 140, remapped to 180bhp.
Over the past couple of weeks i have noticed much more black soot / smoke coming from the exhaust under hard acceleration.
There has always been a small puff of soot which i put down to it being a diesel. But like i say its getting alittle excessive now, i mainly notice it in 3rd / 4th gear and i have noticed no performance drop off at all.

Any potentail cause for this increase? Or does it just need a good service? Anyone else experienced this with there car?

I seem to remember a thread mentioning the EGR valve can cause it. Maybe a good clean would help.

Yep, I vote for the EGR valve being dirty as well.
