    I think I understand what my fault actually is
    There are 2 points in the cycle that require the pump to spin anticlockwise
    I don't think mine is. So my question is what tells the pump to rotate anticlockwise ? And is there anyway to test this ?

    Hello,

    Looking at the wiring diagram (page 1 on this thread). There are two relays that control when the pump runs backwards (J321 and J528), these get a signal from the roof control module, so you could do with checking those relays are working, or at least getting the correct signals.

    Excellent description. I followed it to the letter when my wife's A4 roof wouldn't open and it worked a treat.

    You sir are a star. Two heads are better than one and after your thoughts and my grey matter actually thinking about what you had advised I tested the 2 relays. Sure enough the one controlling the anticlockwise power to the pump was knackered. Once replaced the roof stopped its mid cycle pause and now opens and closes perfectly. Many thanks for your knowledge.

    Hi Khurrum

    I followed your excellent guide in march 2013 and the repair lasted a year. Maybe I should have pryed open or cleaned a touch more, nevertheless I'm quite prepared to give it another go, just wondered, with all the feedback you have, if you've got any new tips to help give a longer lasting repair. Should I use something other than WD40??

    Or do you think it would be best to try and get hold of a new or refurbed motor?

    Hello,

    Simply pry them open ensuring the brush is loose. Be careful not to break the carrier off the circuit board. No WD 40, it'll only attract dust.

    A big thanks for putting this fix up. I, like many others have suffered 'the roof goes down, but now won't close/open' problem. I followed your steps to the letter and cleaned up the motor, checked the brushes and applied some grease the the spindle. Total time from opening the boot, 2 hours. The hardest part was getting the side panel off as there are hidden clips!

    I initially thought manually opening and closing would resolve this issue as a colleague of mine had the same problem a month a go and he just manually moved the hood three times and the job was done! Didn't work for me.

    So thanks once again, great post and fix.

    Done the guide step by step twice and twice I got it to work but I think I'm going to solve to problem more deeper because its always returning. Just 2 questions:

    - Is it possible to change the brushes? is it easy? is there a guide to it?
    - Can I simply disassemble the motor from the oil reservoir so I can send it to fix the brushes or do I have to follow any procedure? Just release the bolts? Is it under pressure? to reassemble it just get the bolts back on?

    Any sugestions?

    I also seen a capacitor "broken" (inside the red line in the pic). Is it replaceable? Can it be the cause of my problems? It has been this way since before and after following the guide the roof worked even with the capacitor this way.

    My problem came back after the first fix (unfortunately with a big black cloud looming over head!).

    I didn't need to clean the contactor again, but I spent a little more time trying to pry open the bush carriers and added a little lithium grease. Hopefully it will last longer this time.

    Is is possible to purchase replacement PCBs including the bushes & carriers, either from Audi or elsewhere? As a more permanent fix/mod?

    Hello,

    Did you pry open the brush carriers ? If not make sure to do this as the carriers tend to get tapered towards the top slot (this may be due to heat)

    You cannot buy replacement brushes, however I am currently in correspondence with a brush manufacturer to get them reverse engineered, if you are interested then please drop me a PM / email. Yes it is possible to replace the brushes, no guide yet however I will compile one once the brushes are available. However if your brushes are fine (not damaged), in my experience the problem is the carrier.

    I am also in the process of getting some carriers reverse engineered, so watch this space.

    It is pretty simple to remove the motor, just hold the assembly up vertical so the oil drains into the reservoir and open the two bolts holding the motor on to the assembly. Should be no pressure provided you have not operated the roof. Watch out for the rubber o-ring and not to damage it.

    Yes you do have a burnt capacitor, it can be replaced by soldering on a new one (which can be done from the top). Send me a PM / email and I will send you the link on where to source one.

    In my experience you have to pry open the carriers a fair bit, but make sure to hold them down to stop "pulling" them off the PCB.
    I have never put any lubricants on the brushes thinking that it may attract particles causing it to jam, let me know how you get on with this.

    Replacement PCD's are not available from Audi and the motor manufacturers have refused to supply them due to commercial agreements in place. However as per my last post I am getting some brushes and carriers made, so PM / email me if interested.

    Hi new to the forum after some trawling on the internet and came across this post .
    I have a 2003 a4 cabrio 8h chassis code and am having difficaulties with the hood i have vcds and have scanned roof module
    it is logging a code 02023 - 08 terminal 87 implausible signal both fuses no.2 40 amp and number 30 30amp are correct have checked feeds to module and motor pack test ok , has had another module fitted via another garage . no other codes present and no action from roof at all just roof light flashing when switch is operated have also checked switch to module operartion .
    any help or advise would be greatly received .

    Hi Doug,
    Have had a similar / same problem before where the issue was the Central Convenience module J393 (suffer water ingress problem in passenger footwell). Unplugged and plugged it back in and all was ok.

    Wonder if the J393 has been changed and not been coded correctly.

    Thank you for a prompt reply appreciated yes i have had the j393 out and removed from housing to psysically inspect there is no signs of water ingress ........ but will check for codings in the morning and report back

    This will be my first post regarding the roof problem. I have a 2002 8H Audi A4. I have the same roof problem you described and I followed your excellent quide to the letter and opened the carriers with a flat screwdriver so they could move freely. However the inside of the pump was covered with a kind of black hard stuff that I had to remove with the screwdriver. After breaking off this stuff allover, I could reach the brushes and clean them as well as I could. In the end I could move them quite freely. After reassembling the unit and trying to open the roof unfortunately nothing happened, the motor was still not running.
    I do not have access to VAGCOM but I can try to get the codes somewhere if it is necessary.
    Any help would be greatly appreciated.

    Any pics of the black stuff ? Take the motor off the hydraulic pump housing, give it 12V and see if it is actually working

    Like the rest I would like to start with a thank you to everyone for all the good information in this thread.

    Now to my problem in a A4 -04 cab;
    My top opens a couple of inches and stops for like that for 15-90 secs before it completes the opening process.
    When closing, the trunklid opens and the top comes up 5 inches or so before sinking back down and stops there for 15-90 secs before closing in the way it should.

    I have tried brushing up the motor as described with no change and there is no faultcodes when i check my vcds.
    If I do the manual reset the problem consists.

    Anyone having any more ideas before I have to surrender and book a time at my local dealer (which is quite crappy in every service aspect there is...)

    Hello Wicker,

    The codes you have a pretty generic and do not mean anything without looking at the measuring blocks, given that the roof is operating your switches are all in the correct positions. Have you checked the hydraulic fluid level? (to be checked with roof in open position). Please post a video.

    The live data plot is not easy to follow. You need to compare you measuring blocks with the roof fully opened and closed against the ones published on rosstech wiki. But as mentioned earlier if the roof is working this means your switches are fine.

    Hi,
    i've used this guide years ago to repair my roof. Today my roof did not operate again. Two inch over and then nothing. When I try to open roof I hear the sound of eletric motor but my roof did not open. I try to clean dirty contact and free brush but nothing. I scan fault code with vag but nothing. What can i try now?

    Hello,

    If you can hear the motor whirring then the fault is not the motor.

    Checked fluid levels ?

    How can i check? in closed position the liquid level is in near "min" ....

    operating by hand the mechanisms do not have blocks

    You have used something similar for WD40 for what ? If you have topped up the hydraulic fluid with ANYTHING apart from the correct hydraulic fluid then you must drain it immediately !

    No no no i've used something similar to wd40 in dirty contacts inside electric motor...what you see is the original hydraulic fluid level..i've never topped hydraulic fluid

    Did you mark the bell housing when you took it off? To make sure it goes back the same way?

    The symptoms on my 56 plate 2.0 tfsi A4 are exactly as described on page 1, and your instructions sound followable.
    What I'm struggling with is the VAGCOM cable / software.
    Do I need to wait to get cable/software or is it safe to try the motor fix before checking fault codes and resetting them?
    Obviously I'm going to try and work out which cable to order but as this Sunday is my only free day off in the next 6weeks and would rather not wait till June if can't source the cables before then.

    I also have the common problem of the roof unlatching at the front and then stopping working.

    I'm not sure if there's any noise coming from the motor and will check this. I also don't have a multimeter.

    I will try and carry out the clean up job as per the guide in this thread but wondered if anyone could confirm the following: -

    - Apart from a small piece of sand paper, do I need wd-40 too? If so, where do I use that?

    - Where is the reservoir for me to check the current fluid level?

    - If that does need topping up, what kind of fluid do I need?

    Also, when I bought the car the roof generally worked fine but quite often it would stop after un-latching at the front and I would need to close the roof again with the switch on the centre console and then try again and it would usually work. Over time the roof became more stubborn and it would then take maybe 2 or 3 attempts for it to work properly.

    Now it just un-latches, the windows drop and then the roof stops completely and won't work at all. Its even got as bad as me having to close the roof manually after this in order to drive the car. It will not close electronically at all.

    To me this all sounds like the classic symptoms but what concerned me most was on a couple of occasions when the Missus was driving the car, the roof decided to unlock and flip up all by itself! My understanding was that the car had some sort of sensor fitted that would stop the roof from working at all at anything above 20mph, so why did this happen?

    Obviously, as she was doing circa 50mph at the time I was worried that the roof would be torn off or severely damaged if it flipped up on its own.

    I have had a mate of mine plug the car into a vagcom device and it came up with numerous error codes about implausible signals and intermittent responses from motors etc.

    The roof doesn't seem to be getting out of sync and operates perfectly when I open or close it manually.

    I've now had to resort to removing the 30amp fuse from the car to stop the roof opening itself while driving but of course this stops the rear de-mister from working too.

    Could anyone shed any light on what on earth is going on with this?

    If the symptoms are exactly as described then there's no harm in following the guide. Don't forget to ensure the brushes are free to move. Vcds can be bought online and delivered by weekend.
