1.9 TDI Auto cutting out..

Just went out with my friend in his 1.9tdi auto and every now and then it cuts out when braking to a stop. Apparently it happens every couple of weeks, so fairly intermittent. Is this a common fault?
He's not had it checked out yet, but i said i'd post on here for him as im sure someone has experienced this!
What would be the best solution?

I had a 1.2 fiesta that used to do this but then it stopped, maybe a small blockage in the fuel line/filter or air intake? Get it serviced.
