Hello everyone,

I don't contribute much in terms of posts due to little knowlege on most issues, but I have the Audi-Sport.net sticker on the car, so I contribute on-the-run :sm4:...

Except for now as my car is sitting dead at a garage waiting for repair...

Symptoms:
Driving down a residential area, doing about 30, the glow plug light goes on, within seconds the engine power halves, so I start to steer towards the curb, and it dies... after that, it won't start... turned the key several times, it goes through the motions but it seems like no fuel is getting anywhere... so I get it towed to my local garage.

Diagnosis:
At first it was suspected that debris from the tree that I park under has clogged all sorts of vents around the engine and may have flooded parts like the ECU. Possibly break in a connector or blown fuse...

I got a call just now saying it has been narrowed down to injectors fault. Apparently is common to the 2006 models (?). It may be one, it may be more that need to be replaced, hours of work...

Cost:
Parts + 3 hours work + vat = £963 that I just don't have... and that's if ONE injector is causing it (£477 + VAT per injector!)

I've had no problems for over 2 years now and was dreading the cambelt change (I'm on 56k atm). I change oil every 10k as well.

Completely out of the blue and I am devastated... :(

I don't know whether I am looking for sympathy, or just wanting to highlight this to people, or for a miraculous monthy pay scheme for this, I am lost...

Has anyone else had this specific engine problem??

think my mothers smart had the same problem, when the power become half of what it used to be, its due to blocked or dirty air something that i couldnt remember. air intake? filter?

My mate had the same problem recently on his 170. Two injectors went within a week of each other. Audi Derby did them free as a goodwill gesture, £2k worth of work.

Well the car is out of warranty, and I have been servicing and repairing it at a specialist. I don't have any contacts within the dealer realm so I doubt I will be able to get a goodwill gesture when I don't use their main services...

I've just given the go ahead to get the diagnosis completed and the repairs started, I'll post the result on here and if there any particular causes for this fault/ any preventative measures I could have taken. Hopefully help someone on here in the long run.

I forgot to mention, his was 2 months out of warranty but he did buy it from there and it was all main dealer servicing.
I don't think there is anything you can do to prevent it happening unfortunately.

Painful reading, I can't believe Audi are getting away with what seems to be a consistant stream of failures on 170 injectors... I'll probably join the sheep... pay up and sell it, £2500 for 4 injectors, a cambelt change due in 4k, service light on, and new brakepads needed... that's half the car's value alone...

I dread the bill I am going to get, but I can't sell it if it doesn't run...:(

What's the point in selling after you have spent all that money??? You are better keeping it as you know the car. If you buy something else, what's to say that won't need money spending on it soon.

I know what you mean, I've done the maths and I will only make a few £ks but I am stuck, if any of the other 3 fail, it is game over for me.

I am even considering WarrantyWise or WarrantyDirect, for £475 (maybe less with haggling) I could get these covered for a year. Reading the small print at the moment and I will have the garage ask them the exact questions directly to make sure I am covered. I know there are 90 day claused and servicing conditions, but if they all do fail, I've saved myself £2k because they'll have to swap all 4 injectors. I think the shock has now worn off and I'm slipping into acceptance...

Car is back!

It took 2 weeks but it is up and running thanks to AmD Technik in Woking. Thanks to Simon and his crew for sorting it all out and at such a lower bill than what I expected after all the hours of work and the constant updates every step of the way!

Overall the injector was replaced and a new loom installed as the previous one was bare at the connector end on the faulty injector! After some digging aroud I found out the car had the same fault in 2007 (year before I bought it) and Injector + ECU were replaced on warranty.

Then I find out the car had been remapped, so the map was removed, replaced with stock and then re-added to eliminate some other voltage problems they were seeing. This is quite a summary of events compared to everything done in between!

I bundled in the annual service and it got done for around £1400. Now for some Breakdown cover just in case and we're all good. :icon_thumright:

my 56 170 se avant qttro 72k had same problem last night at 11pm. Stranded on roundabout on main trunk road so had to get out and push but luckily light traffic. £90 to get it transported to the nearest VW specialist.

1 injector gone and possibly loom damage. You are no alone. Out of warranty as well.

Didnt like the post where 2 went within weeks of each other!

On the bright side made a few quid on shares this week (usually an expensive pasttime) so not as painfull as it could have been!

Had the same happen to me! Only had the car since May. 6 weeks ago car stopped dead out side house. RAC unable to sort and towed to main dealer. £800 quote for injector 4 replacement!! Reduced by good will to £250:yum: as car has full service history even though its 2007 and 120000 miles on clock. I was told its a rare problem! Last week on hols heading for London at M25 junction, stopped dead RAC computer said injector :eyebrows: Towed home 120miles. Audi changed number 1 injector. I was told they do get some fail! Replace for £200 again good will! Audi wont replace other 2 on good will unless faulty. Now waiting to break down :crying: Do I get the others replaced! Time to think and make a decision. Can't fault Audi Kings Lynn they were brill. With full history even get full main service for £250 inc VAT with free MOT when due. Cheep as local garage quotes. See Audi web site. PS. RAC were also great

I have read through this thread with interest as i own a 170.
What i cant quite grasp is what is exactly wrong with the injectors, whats failing?
Is it a metal fatigue issue, blockages, are they a sealed unit with electrical components inside, please enlighten me?
Could they be repleaced by a compentent diy'r, will regular use of a fuel injection cleaner prolong there life?

Jason

Dont know. i was told they had grounded to earth, so i think it must be electrical?

They are piezo electric injectors, maybe a bit too complicated for Audi to make them reliable!!!

Just thought i would contribute to this and advise my previous experience of the problem. Firstly the 3.0TDI, (now sold). Injectors went in June/July this year about 70k on clock, Audi wanted to replace all 6, but sold to a trader at a loss! It ran fine until sat idling and it would belch smoke out of the rear and when you set off, it left clouds of smoke behind!!
2.0TDI 170 '56' plate, this has already had number 2 injector replaced following a total shut down of the car, this was in May. Now, it struggles to start on a morning, when you set off and put under load it stalls, give it some beans and it wont rev passed 3,000, it will eventually set off. At idle engine shakes and judders, rev counter some times hunts, a little smoke from rear, once warm it runs like a dream. At idle no noticeable smoke! Had cam belt done a few weeks ago and it seems to have started after that, but I am told, cam belt does not run pump timing and car would not run at all if timing out. Anyone any ideas? To me it seems to be a cold issue, glow plugs? Or lack of or too much fuel when cold. I once had a mark1 and 2 Golf GTI K-jetronic injection and these had a fifth injector (Cold start) and they did similiar when faulty, but not sure if the diesel have such a device.

Any comments grately appreciated

Thanks

Obviously an issue with the 170 TDI.

I had an injector and loom failure at 48k two days out of warranty, fortunately the dealer replaced under good will. BUT had another fail about a month ago then another last week at 60k. The only good (!!???) news is only one more to go!
The scary thing is that when they fail you have no warning of the immediate engine shut down, it make you wonder twice about using the outside lane of a busy motorway.

And I thought Audis had a reputation for reliability - it could be a return to something Japanese.

Another one here, having all four done as i cant take a chance on another one failing, total cost £2100.
Started my own thread when stuck at the roadside...
http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/audi-s...t-broken-down-awatjng-recovery-archiving.html

Having read threw this thread it would appear this is a age related issue rather than mileage.
My car is four years old in March 2011 and jus done 40k miles.

Do we know if they have upgraded the failing injectors or are we just having 'new' ones of the same failing model fitted that will VERY LIKLEY fail again in three years time?

If its the later i will be selling the car in a couple of years time!

I would appear this issue is a serious and expensive as the balance shaft failure on the BLB engines, can we have this as a 'Sticky' please??

Many thanks.

yeah it seems to be the injectors going to ground internally. even if one goes faulty it effects the live to all four, so the engine just cuts out without warning! what tosser designed it like that you have to ask??????

you seem to get fault codes relating to the main engine relay fault and injectors circuit defective fault.
the main relay fault wont clear but the injector one will delete, until you try starting it then both will be back.
you dont get a fault code for just one injector being faulty so you wont know which it is till you pull the rocker cover off and get your multi meter out.

on the plus side i think audi have just dropped over £100 off the price of these injectors.

Maybe Audi would like to coment on this problem?

I will contact audi when I get my car back hopefully the end if the week.
I want to know the part number of my injectors and the ones they have been replaced with?
I don't expect any financial help from audi but need to know if they are likely to fail again in three years time so I can plan to sell it in two!

Well my injector 3 got replaced July 2007 at 16k by first owner and then same one again by me Sept 2010 at 56k... so at 1 year and 4 years... as Audi will most likely not care about the problem, I'll probably do the same and offload the car sometime next year for a different model with a less expensive Audi-ignored problem to repair.

Since the failure of the third injector on my 2006 170TDI I have heard that some owners of GM, Ford and Mercedes diesels have also been suffering similar problems.

The owner of a non-franchised Audi specialising garage has suggested to me that there is a feeling that fuel producers, in the interests of profit margins, are reducing the additives used and that this is causing the problems as the injectors were designed with the higher grade fuel. Don't know if this really correct.

By the way, I have heard that one owner of a Merc found that despite his car still being warranty Mercedes refused to cover the replacement of two injectors due to alledgedly "inappropriate" fuel being used.

Just read the thread and wanted to add my experiences. A4 2.0 TDi BLB (yes the dreaded BLB!) engine (84,000 mls) started missing on idle about a month ago. VAGCOM showed a No 2 cylinder misfire. Replaced igniter/glow plug loom on spec, still had the same problem! Then replaced the glow plug on spec, still had the same problem! Off to the local indie garage who identified the problem as a failed injector. Sure enough mechanical failure of the injector ball pin and sleeve. Quick £600 to fix of which over £400 was the cost of the new injector!! Garage did a great job. Great when they are going these cars but when they go wrong esp on the engine (eg oil pump and injector) many ££ to fix.

Just an update guys from a discussion I had with Audi

Audi have accepted this as a known fault. As it currently stands they will replace the faulty injector under good will. I don't know if this had cetain criterias attached to it like full Audi service history, age, mileage etc... as that was not mentioned. They will ONLY replace the faulty injector at the time and not all 4 (obviously a cost saving excercise) and they DO replace the faulty injector with a modified type.

Hope this helps other owners with similar problems.

i replaced one on tuesday on a 2007 2.0 tdi seat altea thing.
same problem, no.3 injector was going to earth internally.
looks like these injectors are across the vag range.......

Hi Guys, is this fault common to a specific year/engine, I see talk of BLB engine. Mine is a 170 57plate, im shocked at this thread, i'm now driving my 13th Audi (25yrs in) and never had an issue (luck I guess).

It's just a matter of time, they'll fail when they fail... just make sure you're either in warranty and ready to confront the dealers about it for a "goodwill gesture" even though it's something that needs a recall, or you have a couple of £k to cover the repair with an independant. These have been the only 2 routes taken so far by everyone including myself.

Just had some feed back from my friendly Audi dealer Machanic. He says that he has not heard any official comments but they are fitting injectors with a differnt part number and they cost about £500 not £800 like the old ones!

I`v got a 2005 A4 140 with the BLB engine and it`s currently sitting in the garage waiting on 2 new injectors which i`v been told will come in at £468+vat each, my car never cut out but was juddering badly when accelerating, I tried fuel cleaner additives as recommended by the garage but with no success, only 1 showing as faulty on diagnostic but on further investigation i`v been told another is border line. Euro car parts tell me they sell the injectors for £248 each but have none in stock and don`t know when they will. which is no help at all and actually like another kick in the nuts.
no good to me but if any one else is looking for them later it`s maybe worth a try incase they have them in stock again at the time

Quick question, does it judder through all the gears? Also did it judder when reving at standstill? or just when engaging clutch?

edit: The reason I ask is people who have had problematic injectors havent given these symptoms. Its to do with the injector grounding itself or something which shorts the engine.

you can get a complete engine with injectors X4 off ebay for £300 BUY IT NOW :D 2ltdi's also have another common fault where its not the injectors!. I fitted 4 injectors to my 2.0l tdi still wouldnt start & run smooth turned out to be the injector wiring loom that had gone faulty the new one from the dealers is a modified wiring loom and 3+ hrs to fit injectors is bullS**T it took me 2 mins to whip rocker off 4 multispline bolts of the follower & two multispline bolts bolts for each injector and wiring loom unplug basically plug n play tackle also common faults for 2l's are the egr n throttle body's make the car blow smoke out of the back n shake alot! the fault with them is that they put a plastic cog on the flap and a metal one on the controlling motor after 40'000k the plastic cog strips its teeth bad design flaw £200 for egr valve n £200 for the throttle body still cheaper to but an engine with 4 injectors aswell keep it in storage for when the rest of the engine goes faulty :/...

Just had my Audi MOT'd, passed:faint:, ask dealer to look at bad starting. turn out injector 3 playing up. They are replacing it at 100% good will because i have had 2 others replace last year, under high % good will.:yum:. pays to have it service by dealer. :sm4:

our 2007, 24000 mile tdi 170 has just quite with almost a disaster. lost all power with little brakes/steering and narrowly avoided schoolkids and a shop on a downhill bend!!!!!!! audi want lots of money to repair. car bought from audi glasgow and full main dealer stamps. shocking. they say its an injector fault. 5months out of warranty but only 24k.

Talk to the dealer and ask about 'good will'. if no joy go direct to Audi

I've had similar problems......1 went, then another.

I've had all mine replaced as a 'gesture of goodwill' and my 2.0Tdi 170 was out of warranty......and remapped!

This is a known fault with these engines and you should push your dealer on getting them ALL replaced free of charge on safety grounds.

Does yours have any dealer service history? I've just had one fail and I don't fancy paying for the others when they fail.

Mine has full history, it is a 2007 on 120k mile. i am going to contact dealer about last injector and see what they say.
