Yeah, VAG-COM is loads of fun.

Went out in mine the other day to do a power and torque run with VAG-COM data logging.

You should have seen me driving around like a nutter in second and third gear trying to get it right!! :-)

Sorry guys but don't really know what VAG-COM does so forgive me if I sound stupid but what did you buy VAG-COM for?

ok rich...cool! yeah had a look and i really want it!

then remembered i aint got a laptop, and the one at work aint got a com port!

its either find an old laptop, or buy the USB version? bit more money though (any chance of audi-sport discount? )

can you use the diagnostic functions on a normal PC if it was say in the garage. or does the car need to be moving?

cheers Rich

soz for shouting...lol

Okay, VAG-COM is some software that a guy called Uwe in the states has written.

It interfaces with your cars ECU to "talk" to it.

You can read off/remove fault codes. change settings to your alarm/other convenience stuff.

To can also log data from all the engines sensors.

Its basically a version of what Audi use at the dealerships, except their version are standalone units etc.

Make sense??

Like I say, the cool thing is you can do is make your own power/torque graphs like you'd get from a rolling road with the data from it.

RIght,

Well USB is better cos its faster, so offers a higher sampling rate. The cars doesnt have to be moving, so a PC in the garage would do for the simple stuff but is no good for logging .etc

Unfortunately, we have no say in pricing .etc, we simply ship it!

There are advanced features that can be entered into, but the "safe" stuff is all grouped together. As long as you aren't silly with it, you'll be fine.

With my version, I'm not supposed to query the airbags as it can set them sometimes!!

The later versions have probably fixed this issue.

your own power and torque figures? that is sweet
Is the data logging a module that you have to buy on top and in what kind of format do you get the data?
I would be interested in seeing what figures you got in 2nd and 3rd gear. What car do you have?
It would interesting to know if anyone actually compared rolling road figures with VAG-COM especially after a remap

Any excuse for a laptop..much betterh than desktops!

You cant really screw much up to be honest. When your adapting stuff like central locking settings .etc, its best to make notes on the old codes, so if it doesnt go to plan, you put the old code back in and it will be fine. The codes translate to binary for turning setting on/off .etc

The data is logged as an excel spread sheet. Depending on what measuring blocks you choose is to what the spreadsheet looks like.

I've got a standard A3 1.8T. According to my calculations "lol!" my car is putting out exactly waht is should, which is cool.

Take a look here for instructions on how to put the data into excel to get a power and torque graph. It works well and can be argued that it is more acurate than a dyno.

Anyways, have a read of this. http://forums.audiworld.com/vag/msgs/457.phtml

The USB is no faster than the serial Rich the sampling rate is limited by the ECU the USB was made simply for people without serial ports on their laptops. Your actually better with the serial apart from being cheaper it works with other software e.g. ECU Explorer from APR
Ive got a USB if someone wants to swap for the serial version (Ross Tech cable only) drop me a PM

thanks
that thread was a bit complicated though
just wondering why you have to coast the car which if I understood well data from that period correspond to power losses due to friction which are what happen in real world
i.e. the first figures you get are the real-world ones and that would be why it is more accurate?
Does anyone know where are located the sensors as if there are on (or close to) the wheels the figures would be power and torque at the wheels
