New Owner Teething Questions

Hello,
I've just become the proud owner of an '02 S8. I'm very impressed with the general quality and the ride. However, while driving today the engine management light has come on. It was a private sale so no warranty.
Is there any way I can self diagnose?
What is VAGCOM I've seen mentioned many times?

Finally, on a lighter note - how do I get at the front fog lights to change a blown lamp?

VAG-Com is a diagnostic tool (software and comms lead) to interogate fault codes and such like. Unfortunately with most modern vehicles it is not easy to do without such a tool. VAG-Com would tell you what sensors are giving out of the norm readings and will display logged error codes.
