Re: buying a A8 and price

    Hi Will,

I have a 1996 4.2 Sport and have to say the car is awesome. In general there is very little to look out for in terms of common faults, be aware of the gearbox leaking onto the cats, this is a problem on all the V8 quattros (A6+A8) whilst it isnt a major problem its just a bit inconvienient and not cheap to fix.

Its good that the service has been done but be aware that an 80,000 service will set you back a bit when it comes round. I had mine done at an Audi Specialist (who is a good mate) and it cost over 1000.

There is a comprehensive buying guide here

I would certainly recommend the sport over the standard A8, I think the benefits that you get make the car, the seats are fantastic.

As far as the engine goes, I have never driven a 3.7 but the 4.2 is spot on, plenty of power whenever you need it and it always surprises me just how quick it is (not far off your S3!)

I agree with you that the price does seem a little too high, I think 16,500 is about right, autotrader tends to be the best way of judging prices, IMO parkers and the like always seem a bit out of touch.

It may be worth having a thorough check over of the bodywork, I have just gone through a big dispute with Audi about corrosion, which I didnt expect with an aluminium car, and whilst mine seems to be particularly bad it seems that my car is not the only one.

    Good luck

    Matthew
