Noise from the drive axe/gearbox?

Hi,

I have an 02 S8 (with 94000 miles on the clock) which has developed a noise (clanging/banging) somewhere in or near the gearbox. The mechanic seems to think it is the gearbox as it is noisy all the time. To me it sounded more like suspension as it only happens when you go over an uneven road/bump or if you brake.

Has anybody had any similar experience?

I heard it may be worth while changing the oil in the gearbox. Would that help?

Any suggestions are welcome.

I have a 97 4.2 QS with similar noise.

However, Just sailed through an MOT so not quite sure what it is. The mechanic never mentioned anything about gearbox mounts, presuming these are checked during an mot?
