I currently have an A4 but for family reasons need to buy a bigger car. The A6 seemed big enough and love Audi's with Quattro so an Allroad looked ok. However, I've never owned an Auto before and the wife suggested one. In theory it's fine but I read horror stories on the A6 Multitronic and some still pretty scary ones about £1000 repairs on the Tiptronics.

I guess I could sum up my concerns, as follows:
What are peoples experiences?
What Auto does an Allroad have or can it have either?

I've found a car and am in negotiations with a dealer. However, I need to firm up my opinion of the Auto gearbox asap. It's a 2002 with what appears to be a 5 gear auto that has an option to shift the lever towards the driver and manually select up/down changes. Doesn't appear to have any other options (sport mode, etc) from what i remember.

Help?!?!?!?!?!?

All Allroads have the tiptronic gearbox fitted. Not as problematic as the Multitronic/CVT.
I personally have a 2.5TDI Allroad with tiptronic and have had no probs whatsoever. If the gear changes feel smooth and there are no unusual noises on the test drive then i wouldnt worry.
