2.5 TDi fuel pump . . . . how much ? !!!!

A friend has a 2001 Allroad 2.5 TDi quattro, and has been told that it needs a new fuel pump. The car has been taken to a non-franchised dealer, and they have quoted . . . . wait for it . . . . £3k !!!!!
Can someone tell me if this is right ? Or better still, where is the best place to go for a replacement pump ?
