Angry 2.5TDI Engine broke 130,000 miles

My A6 is in need of a top end as cam & followers have failed. Told by garage that chepest option is a reconditioned engine swop. Ł2700.

Now do i spend this sort of money os a 2002 A6 as whats it worth?

Does the price sound about right for a reconditioned engine.

    Cheers

I had a very similar situation to you with my A4 2.5TDi Q in October at 128k miles, after the timing belt skipped. What happened to yours? I decided to get mine done, whats it worth as a non-runner? Few hundred for parts maybe.....

I paid Ł1500 plus vat for another engine and paid my local garage whom I trust Ł1000 to swap them over which will give you an idea of cost. However I was unlucky in that within 6 days the second engine also skipped its timing belt Another engine was fitted under warranty by the engine supplier but it took almost a month and a lot of damage to the car before I had it back. (I am still in discussion ref damage reimbursement.)

What I hadn't banked on was just spending another Ł1200 with a local specialist getting the timing set properly for the engine and fuel pump, and replacing other odd and sods such as MAF, fan viscous coupling etc. So far I have spent in the region of Ł4k and it still doesnt go like the old one did.

I thought I was safe in using a garage I trusted, but due to the engine failing through no fault of my own I ended up in a situation where an unknown garage did the warranty work.

I hope you have a better experience than I did! Good Luck!

Always a tricky one this... If you have to get a garage to do it, it might be worth scrapping the vehicle as the above post I have seen many times.

If you've got the kit and the know how for some DIY, then go for it. I would however for peace of mind go for the warrantied reconditioned engine if you decide to get someone to fit it.

I'm in the same boat with an A4 avant - has a perfectly acceptable engine - 2.6 V6 which does like 20 to the gallon so I'm thinking of yanking it and throwing in a 1.9tdi - Always one of weighing up the costs and seeing if it's worth it...

Might want to give these guys a shout as a first port of call to give you an idea... supply AND fit by one company would be the way to go I think then there's no table tennis warranty issues. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/AUDI-A4-2-7-TDI-05-08-180BHP-BPP-ENGINE-SUPPLY-FITTING_W0QQitemZ120373102050QQcmdZViewItemQQptZUK _localservices_car_vehicle_GL?hash=item12037310205 0&_trksid=p3286.c0.m14&_trkparms=66%3A4|65%3A3|39% 3A1|240%3A1318

Ha`ve just had exactly this problem. Replace 4 cams all followers oil pump water pump timing belt Ł3088 courtesy of my local Skoda garage. If the rest of the engine is OK why replace it with an unknown one? Your 2700 will buy you a recon engine but I would be incredibly careful where i got it from and would not buy it over the net sight unseen (see my thread in the Diesel forum). You still need to allow for taking out the old one and putting in the new one. Is the Ł2700 exchange or recon of your own engine? Just be very careful. I was offered Ł2k for my car without an engine - doesn't buy you a new car.

I think that is the single most important point raised in all honesty. If I ever had to do it all over again () I would keep the engine I had and rebuild that, rather than buying some unknown item.
