My '99 A6 Quattro has just failed its MOT because the offside (RHS) steering rack boot is split. Anybody got any experience of solving this problem? Is it something I can do myself?

I called my local independent who groaned and said it wasn't a nice job, but he hasn't rung back with his estimate yet.

I don't mind tackling it myself if it's just a spanners-and-logic job, but can't find any how-tos on the Interweb.

I let my local independent do it in the end. For anyone who's interested, they quoted 3.5 hours plus about £40 parts + tracking alignment.
