I am thinking of buying an Audi Allroad as a tow car to tow my rally car around.

I am looking to get around a 51plate 2001/2 car, could you tell me what to look out for and what to check for on them as I am new to Audi's and do not have a clue!

I have been advised to stay away from the auto/tiptronics as there were a few problems with them, so I was told!

I am looking for the 2.5 TDI 6 speed manual.

Is it worth looking at a high mileage car with full dealer service history, the cars I have looked at on the net range from 80k to 175k around that age.

Also what spec do they come with as standard and what is a good spec to get!

As you can see I am new to all this so I am looking for your valued advice.

Sorry for all the questions and I hope some of you can help me.

Thanks.

Arron.

check out this link for one of the common problems on the 2.5 TDI, the crankcase breather blocking up.
As to the automatics its the multitronic CVT gearbox that seems to have problems. Not sure what auto box is in a 51 car but the tiptronic in my A6 is has been faultless and its on 88K.

This is a link to answers I got when looking for a 2.5TDI avant

I tow a caravan with a 2.5tdi tiptronic. Tows like a dream I have towed with Land Rovers and big Volvos this is the best.

But as previously respondent says stay clear of multitronic boxes.

These engines run fine at high mileages I'm on 85k. But timing belt replacement on these is due at 80k - big big bill - so look for one that has recently been changed.

Get one with a factory fitted tow bar - the electrics on these cars are sensitive and can do without being chopped by enthusiastic tow bar fitters.

xenon headlight option is worth having too

Have someone connect a Vag Com for you to see if there are any fault codes.

I have a 2.7T and it is an aweswome car (and bulletproof) - much more powerful than the Tdi so should do better in the towing dept. I did quite a bit of research before I bought mine and it appears that there are generally more issues with the Tdi's. Make sure that there are no issues with the self levelling suspension - it is very expensive to fix if something goes wrong.
If you are looking for a 2.7, let me know as I am selling mine due to a recent purchase of a S6.
Cheers

Android, Thanks for the reply, I am really looking for a TDI.

Thanks anyway.
