Sounds like the auxilliary belt has come adrift because it powers the alternator (the battery light) and the power steering pump (the heavy steering)
    Chris

The problem with common sense, is that its not that common.

    happened on my old 2.8q.

Its possible to drive but very hard work. The only thing is the battery wont be charging, so possibly, it could drain the battery low enough to not be able to power the ecu etc and you will stop.

parts wise its very cheap, its just labour to get to it. should only be a couple of hours work though

    Cheers

Sounds like definaltely the alternator (or belt)
Mine went in December whilst abroad and cost around 700 Euro to fix
Alternator was 400 & labour 300 (At an Audi dealership)
I have the 2.7T so yours may be less expensive
I will not be driving the car too far though as you dont want the battery to drain and risk other electrical issues

You could always have a go yourself if you have a basic engineering knowledge. The drive belt isn't as tricky as a cam belt.

If it's only slipping on the pulleys then you might even get away with just retensioning it, but it depends on how damaged the belt is from the slipping.

    OUCH 1550

okay car is back, Bel;t snapped and then managed to snap the Idler, This then caused more damage.

in all though the cost with labour came to 1550 Euro

Thanks to all who replied and tried to help me

I think you've been taken for a ride there.

If all they have done is changed the auxiliary belt it should only be a couple of hours work.

I know on my V6, its front bumper off and pulll forward the radiator etc, but I now how long its takes as I helped my mate change the water pump a couple of weeks ago.

Even a stealer rates it wshould have been no more than 3-400
