hi guys

I'm about to purchase a 4.2 tiptronic and as my 19" from my current A6 aren't wide enough for the flared arches of the 4.2 I'm considering putting some 20" alloys on.

Main problem is I don't have unlimited funds so looking for a used set.

Question is........ Are any of the Mercedes fitments ok (even the ML with smaller tyres!) as I've seen a few 20" x 8.5" to 10" wide rims about..... I know many have the same 5/112 stud pattern but not sure on how the offset work and what I'd need.

If not mercs what about putting a8 20" rims on there? Compatible?

Also what size tyres should I be looking at getting and I can keep my eye out.......

I don't really want to use spacers and want the arches filled as they should be

If this is not possible to do without spending big bucks then I'll hunt down some genuine 19" rs6 alloys. Then again, they won't be cheap!

Any advice out there?

well i'm running 8.5" wide 20's on my A6 TDi, If you've got wider arches then 9 or 9.5 inches wide should be wide enough, tho i'd check the clearance u got on ur wheels at the mo, to see if you need a lower offset, i'e et20 or 25 as opposed to et35 to bring the wheel out from the arch.

As for tyres 245 - 265 wide should be ok on a 35/30 profile but u'd have to speak to a tyre/wheel specialist really.

thanks, yeah I want to end up with the correct rolling radius for the wheels if possible.

As I got the wide arches I know loads of wheels will go on but I don't want to end up with anything smaller potentially needing spacers or the wrong tyres with less traction.

anyone got 20"s on an rs6 or s6 or a 4.2 tipronic that can give me some idea?

well my wheels are something like 2.5% more rolling radius, well all i know is the actual ride height is increased by 15mm (30mm larger in diameter) than my 195/60/15 as standard.

I think there are very few (if any) people on here who have been daring enough to go for 20's on an a6, most stick with 19's

I'd say just look what tyre combo's they have on S6's/RS6's and go for same if not a lil wider width same offset and reduce the profile.

oh and btw going larger in rolling radius will not throw the speedo out, mine is still spot on somehow?

When i was looking at 20's i got a set for £600 but they didn't fit (too wide) 245/35/20 tyres were £100 each so for around £1k mark they were cheap, but that combo wouldn't go, so forked out £1850 for the set i got now, well worth it! look good, very durable, and strong! i've not had any problems with pothole damage etc, yet n i've owned them a year nearly, i've had replica 17's n 18's on more tyre! 40 profile n they were worse!

I've found out rs6, s6 and 4.2s have 255/40/18 or 255/35/19 as standard,

I don't like the sound or 255/30/20's! they're gonna cost a fortune!

I have 19's on my standard body a6 avant at the moment with 235/35/19, what size are the 20's on yours?

is the standard a6 offset et35 then? is that number the amount of mm.......?

ie et20 would stick out by a further 15mm than the et35?

cheers

well my tyres are 225/35/20 about £100 each, tho they are a little stretched to fit, ideally these would be on an 8" wide rim not 8.5, but it works fine n i've had no issues with them, plus i can'e go any wider than 235 on them or else it won't go up inside the arch, but they don't make a 235/35/20 yet.

ET35 is the std offset on audi's, and yes thats 35mm from the central position of the wheel, a lower offset would bring the wheel outwards more to match the width increase, and what you've said is correct.

I'd say see how much clearance you've got on ur 19's n work out if u can just go wider which will pu 1/2 an inch either way for every inch, or u need a lower offset to poke out the wider wheel so that it doesn't protrude any further in to the arch to prevent catching.

sound like I could get away with 255/35/20's then....... maybe smaller 245's on the front?

I could do with finding out what 20" combination is perfect for the wide arch though......

I guess it's 5/112, et35, 20" x 9" or 9.5" ?????

If I found something with a et45 for do you think I may have issues with the inside rubbing? I think the audi a8 are et45.......
