    Still Having Perfomance issues with my 2.5tdi Allroad

    Hello

    I am still having low RPM performance issues with my Allroad. See my other postings.

    In desperation I took it to the local independent Audi centre. They have plugged it in and assure me it is not the MAF sensor etc.etc.

    They claim the timing is out, and this is probably due to a "stretched or worn" timing belt. The have suggested a new on be fitted, but when pushed as to whether that would solve the problem they stood back a bit saying it was a stating point to work from.

    The belt is still well within life according to the service book. 2 years left or 20,000 miles.

    I know a little about these things, mainly that if the timing was out by a little the management unit would cope with it. Right?

    I am really loathed to spend out on a timing belt job yet. What do you guys recon I should do next?

    Never heard of that one before!!!!

    If your timing was taht much out it would be rough all round,noisy and smoke like a *****,VERY much doubt that your belt has "stretched" as they are not supposed to do this and the tensioner would have compansated it anyway.When was it last changed?

    What's the service history like?

    Are you saying that they found no fault codes when they plugged her up and if the timing was out why did'nt they RE-SET it ffs?????????

    Sounds like they just wanted to make a few quid on a belt change!!!

    You are going to have to bite the bullet buddy and put your hand in your pocket, I have already seid start with New Maf,then try a new N75 sensor peanuts in comparison to an inutile belt change for 800!!!!!!!!!!!!!! or better still sell it and get a push bike.

    What more can I say?

    Pretty much what I thought about the timing belt.

    The service history is complete up to 45000 with Audi main, then from then on independent Audi Specialist. The latter I have contacted, and they know the car and the owner, and said he was a very conscientious owner and that the car has been loved.

    They quoted £350 + vat for the belt job this included an additional drive belt that does something else.

    I tell you, me on a push bike has more power and acceleration than the Allroad does at the moment lol.

    If you do the cambelt change properly with all the belts,tensioners and waterpump you can usualy reckon on 350 +vat for bits alone!!!!

    Yeh I thourght it was reasonable, but if it is not needed yet it is still dear.

    I am going the the local stealership 2 moz for a second opppinion. I'll let you know how I get on.

    Went to the stealership. Very seemingly knowledgeable chap took the car out. His diagnosis is the variable geometry turbo is not working a low engine speeds. He tested the actuator and confirmed it was working OK, but said that the fins inside the turbo could be faulty even thought the actuator works. Something about the variable pitch getting stuck?

    When the car is ticking over the the actuator is in the lifted position, and it is revved up it drops, so looks like something is happening.

    Hi there. I am fairly new on the forums but your posting caught my eye. I work for a VW dealer (service advisor so dont ask anything too technical) and have just bought a traded in 2.5tdi quattro A6 avant. While looking throught some of the invoices supplied, I noticed one for an engine problem where it wasn't revving properly. From memory it was a turbo boost pressure valve problem. I can get the part number in case it helps, unless your problem is sorted. Excuse my ignorance but were all Allroad 2.5Tdi's 180BHP??

    Thanks for your reply.

    I took it to a local performance specialist. They plugged it in and found a fuel delivery delay. The cause turned out to be timing. The belt was 1 tooth or so out and was running retarded.

    They have now advanced it and I have taken it out for a test before they finished tinkering and assembling. It still has a bit of lag, but seems that is a bit normal with this car.

    Time will tell if this is the fix. Stripping the front revealed a couple of things, but most importantly that it had not been put back together properly last time the front was off. Bolts missing, n/s light not put in properly, and some evidence of "heavy handed mechanics". None of which is harmful, but casts a doubt on the previous mechanics. Oh and the A/C belt was about to ping, so that was replaced.

    Anyway I get it back on Friday and will report again.

    I have got it back. It is marginally better but not that much.

    The garage did some research, and were told of a known problem with the crank shaft timing pulley on this engine. Apparently the key way wears and causes timing problems, but can't be seen until the timing belt is off.

    Anyone heard of this?

    Hello Jason

    I am just fecked off with it.

    From an overnight cold start it takes 10 seconds to get to 4000 rpm! Practically un-drivable when it is cold.

    Although it has been on 2 different diagnostics systems and both say the MAF is OK, I have decided with the general weight of evidence that the only way is to try a new one.

    My Allroad has the Hitachi MAF. I got the best price from the local Skoda dealer.

    I'll let you know if that works. I will get it tomorrow (Tuesday)

    How much are yo being charged for new Hitachi MAF. Mine has a Hitachi MAF and that is my next line of action if the vacume T piece main stealers say is the fault turns out to be a red herring.

    I got it for just under 80, but I did get a bit of discount. Do you want the Audi part No.?

    I did PM you a week or so ago about your problem to see if you had solved it. I guess this post says you have not.

    What is with this vacuum T piece? I have spoken to several main dealer service departments. All seem to be genuinely surprised by the description of the problem. I did try to get through to Audi UK Tech, but they told me "this is not a customer facing dept." so that was a dead end.

    I got the MAF and fitted it. It is slightly better, but unless I knew it was a new one I probably would not have noticed.

    It has occurred to me that having not driven a comparative car it might be worth seeing if I could get someone to do an acceleration test for me to compare. (See my new posting).

    A couple things that are noticeable is the instant MPG is better, and so to is the feel of the car at higher speed, seems to need less throttle to speed than before.


    Still can believe this is right though. I still would not want to tow anything with it, or cut it fine pulling out. It will be interesting to see what it is like in the morning when it is cold.

    Sorry - No PMs through to me.
    The T type piece they mentioned on mine if one of the juctions for the various vacume hoses that go to the Turbo.

    Do not know much more but also have asked that the do the gearbox oil as well. I know the car is not quite right as that much slower than my A4 which also has a multitronic gearbox.

    Will let you know Thursday night if improvement.

    Interesting thread. I switched from a 100 2.8 petrol quattro to an Allroad 180bhp tdi a few months ago. My initial impression was of difficulty taking off smoothly and quickly in 1st, and of being unsure of the correct gear most of the time when under 40mph.
    Those impressions have gone. It takes time to get the accelerator/clutch coordination right from a standing start - too much and you hit the rev limiter before you have time to change into second - too little and it is very flat. However, I have now got used to it.
    I did tow a large and heavy trailer on a long trip - it was hardly noticeable, except for somewhat reduced acceleration and a big change in fuel consumption - from 35 to 20 mpg at similar speeds.
    Hustling round back roads it feels much more like a petrol vehicle than a diesel.

    It is at Audi at the moment. So far they have found the static diesel pump timing is out to the point of they are surprised it runs. They have fixed that, but there is now a question mark over the turbo. Looks like someone has been in there that is not sure what they are doing.

    I am going to post a thread about the turbo.

    Looks like the previous owner has been less than honest about some of the latter history of the car.

    Hopefully once it is sorted I will have the car everyone says it should be.
