Saturday night and I'm on here posting a new thread!

Where did it all go wrong?

Well anyway I am now, a proud owner of a 1998 Audi A6 Avant 2.5tdi Quattro SE Sport with the multitronic gearbox.

When should the automatic transmssion fluid be changed in these motors?

Are you sure it's a Multitronic? I didn't think it was launched as early as 1998. More likely it's a normal automatic with Tiptronic.

But if it is Multitronic. the oil must be changed every 40,000 miles.

hmmm - now I am confused. I thought I had the steptronic gear bix but with the finger tip gear shift on the steering wheel - which in my ignorance was called multitronic.

Can someone clarify please?

if you have the 17 digit vin, i can check for you

No, Multitronic is a completely different type of gearbox. It's a stepless, Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), with no fixed ratios and no torque converter either. See link below for Multitronic

I suspect what you have is a conventional automatic and torque converter, with manual override facility. This is often called either Tiptronic (Audi, Porsche) or Steptronic (BMW) and manual changes can either be made by moving the selector sideways to a different fore-aft plane) or via optional steering wheel controls. See link below for conventonal auto with Tiptronic.

Hope this helps.

Cheers Edmorales but it sounds jdp has hit the nail on the head.

I thought the gearbox or the clutch had slipped the other day!

After jumping into my car and starting her up, I tried to pull away and there seemed to be no power - FEK I thought, I have only had the car for a couple of days, is it a clanger disguising itself as a beautiful beast?

Well I pulled over and turned the car off. After a restart she was fine - Any ideas on this one?

Did you resolve this problem? I have a car that might be identical to yours, except it's a '99. I bought it in November and four times my gearbox has switched to emergency mode. All the gear position indicators in the dashboard illuminate, but a switch-off and switch-on seems to clear the problem. My local Audi dealer in Sussex has offered to plug it into a computer for an error-code diagnosis and will relieve me of £95 + VAT for the priviledge.

I'm thinking I'll change the gearbox oil as a starter - see if it helps.

Any thoughts?

Well I have had my motor fully services at a specialist in Welwyn and he said that gearbox fluid was fine.

As for the fault it is very much an intermittent problem.

I had my motor put ont he old vag-com and I have two fault codes that i trying to resolve I am going to post under the VAG section!

check it out!
