the port is under the cubby hole in the lower dash by the drivers door as far as leads go i got 1 from ebay and downloaded the software from vag com. Ver4.01 i think for USB.

This is the response I got from Ross-Tech on the cables for my cars.
"For use with both of your vehicles, any of our Interfaces plus a 2x2 adapter should work fine. The KEY-COM (if you have a 9-male-pin Serial
Port) or the KEY-USB (if you only have a USB port) would be the most
cost-effective:"
if you have a serial port on your laptop, your cheapest and good bet is a simple KL serial cable. KKL cables will also work and they're more available now than KL. vagcom version 312 is more than adequate.
