Any of you 4.2 owners got any hints or tips on what to look for on these.

Apart from the general stuff are there any little niggles that you know about know and wish you'd spotted when you bought the car?

All advice is welcome.

hi I have a 2000 A6 4.2 SPORT & these are serious cars. cheaper on insurance than S6 & RS6. I've had NO problems with mine, the only thing that is worth while doing is getting some of stone chip protector to go at the front of all the arches to protect them from the stones. Oh & make sure it's been serviced well!!!

I've heard that in general, A6's eat tie rods, but usually after 50k miles.

Standard operating procedure for me when purchasing ANY used car is to make sure it has a clean CARFAX...

Other than that, I'd check EVERY little option, and the 4.2 has a LOT.....

Heated seats, heated steering wheel, radio, CD (changer?), power seats, auto-leveling headlights, headlight washers, all power windows, AUTO climate control - A/C AND heat, etc, etc, etc,.

Take your time and be methodical....it could save you a boatload of money in the future if you detect any issues NOW (and use it to negotiate a better price!).

Good luck.

Shoman
