Drove my wife's 2004 Allroad diesel last week and noticed a clunk from the transmission when pulling out of a junction, seemed to be from the back of the car.
Also whilst going down a hill I lifted off the throttle with my hand on the gear stick, with the car in fourth gear the gear stick gave three to four back / forward motions ?

Its just turned 79000 miles
Any ideas on what this could be.

also the airbag light is constantly on, any checks I can make prior to going to a dealer.

Dont go to the dealer if somebody local has vcds and willing to plug it in! This will tell you the fault with the airbag and possibly reset the light.

The clunk, maybe the bottom engine mount? look under the bonnet when the car is started and stopped and see what movement there is?

Seconded on the gearbox mount. I would recommend an uprated polybush item - maybe powerflex - makes a huge difference to stiffening up the whole transmission
