Cannot connect to controller with code reader

Hi , I decided to hook my laptop up today to my A6 2.8 quattro. It recognised the car but couldn't connect to the controllers , I thought it was maybe the software ( the free edition of vcds ) so I tried my mates normal code reader and it had the same issue , has anybody came across this problem before ? It worked okay in the past.I tried removing the battery for 5 mins but no luck!
