Help please

Hi All,

I'm hoping for some advice. On Wednesday morning i'm going to look at a 2.5TDI Allroad, 2005 with 45,000 miles and the automatic gearbox.

It has full service history and seems in good overall cosmetic condition.

I would hugely appreciate advice on what to look out for beofre buying it.

I've done a little research and am lead to believe potential areas of concern are the air suspension and the gearbox, so in particular any tell tale things to look out for on these would be fantastic.

Also it has 225/55/R17 wheels and I would want to put Hankook Optimo 4S tyres on it. They don't come in that size though, nearest is 225/60/17" would these be ok to fit.

Cambelt and water pump replaced?
Gearbox oil serviced?
State of front control arms?
State of Cv Boots?
Rust round inside of arches?
Undercovers in place?
Vag Com code scan for any faults?

60 profile tyres will upset the speedo calibration slightly not ideal on an auto and also your insurance company if they ever have to notice them...

The gear box mechatronic takes inputs and feeds several systems such as the ABS and Traction. It expects inputs that match e.g engine speed, road speed, ABS etc unlike a manual that just does what you tell it.

Whilst the ratio difference is slight its software and may make the 'wrong' judgement as to what gear and when or that reading means I should activate stability control or just throw a 'I dont understand' code error.

You insurance company may be interested as (apart from looking for any excuse not to pay up) it 'could' affect the ABS and traction in an 'emergency' and would class as 'modified' from the manufacturers specification.

Some of the latest VAG's cars for example have winter tyre settings so the software can better cope with conditions against expected behaviour.

In reality it may make little difference as the A6 C5 had a range of tyre sizes, profiles and rims through its life. Speed and load ratings are of course the real issues.

That will be fine as the difference is only 3.3%, but one thing to bear in mind is that even with the right size of tyre I doubt your speedo will be bang on.
