Average MPG - not what expected

Hi all

After last weeks saga of having our 2003 A6 written off, we are trialling a replacement 2005 3.0 tdi quattro SE. On the trip home on the motorway we only averaged 34mpg but the manufacturer states we should have had as much as 43mpg.

There was only me in the car and minimal fuel so no weight in the car. No faults on dash, although the car does need a service.

Any ideas anyone?

Auto or manual? That's quite low IMO. My experience is as follows: A6 3.0 TDI s-line automatic, 61K on the clock, at a constant 70 it will do 42/43 mpg on a level stretch, at 80 it will do 39/40 mpg.

Maybe it needs a service? An old air filter can affect mpg and to a lesser extent old oil. Of course the engine could be knackered.....
