No obvious signs of a leak. Any thoughts ?? Over 1,000 miles, never checked before so have no idea how long its been like this.

Have been checking my water and oil when I clean it each week and after nearly 5K miles neither have budged.
Just top it up and hopefully just cr@p dealer inspection! - probarbly worth telling them though as if it were a major defect you told them very early on?
Definitely worth a mention to dealership

I have just had exactly the same on my new A3.
Took it to the dealer last week who gave it a thorough inspection top and underneath the engine - no sign of a leak anywhere. Tech said this was most likely an airlock in the coolant from the factory that has shifted after being run at higher revs for the first time ( and unlikely to be bullsh*tting me as it a german technician in a garage I have used for over 10 years).
Coolant has been topped up and in the last 200 miles has stayed at max.
If it drops again they will take it back in for a pressure test to check the head gasket and cylinder head for leaks
