No dashboard illumination

Help,
noticed last night that I had no illumination in the 60/80mph area of the dash.

Removed the console and moved the bulb from the oil area - everything okay

Today I went to autoparts store and got a new bulb, not exactly same but guy to me it would be okay

Fitted it and later as it got darker noticed I had no illumination on dash at all. All indicators, warnings lights, DIS etc work it is just the illumination

Removed bulb and bought another from a different autoparts store but still no joy. Actually when I swapped it into the indicator, the indicator did not work

Anyone any ideas ? I can't see a thing at night !

The car is a 96 A4 1.8T Sport

ps checked all fuses and they seem to be okay

erm has it blown them all?! get a multimeter and check for continuity across each bulb to see which are naff.

also do your sidelights work as if ur illumination ONLY comes on when sidelights is on, maybe a fuse is blown. Happened in my clio once when i new nothing about car electrics, did my head in!! changed fuse and worked fine.

If you used the wrong sort of bulb then you could have blown a fuse, get the right bulbs from Audi dealer

All other lights and indicators/warning lights working, only the illumination is not

Checked fuses and looked but replaced all those pertaining to illumination anyway ie 3, 5 and 15

Still no joy

Can the bulbs be purchased elsewhere ?

I know they are Osram 12V 1.1W

Does anyone know of an outlet ?
