car started running lumpy yesterday, just got home from maybe a ten minute drive and car vibrating, strong smell of eggs coming from exhaust and did not clear when revved. took to garage and they said misfire from failed coil pack, took it back today to get pack replaced.
No difference. checked with voltmeter and no pulse coming form number 2 coil pack or lead.
Anyone help, is this a common problem?
Any help appreciated.
I am waiting for a vw/audi specialist to call me back.

It's probably the ignition amplifier on the airbox.

They always seem to drop cylinder 2 first when the pack up.

yep, had the same thing myself the other week. got the ignition control module from GSF for £60 ish quid (£169+vat from Audi) swapped it over and everthing is golden again

brilliant... thanks.
VW/Audi specialist called me back today and said it could be that, they cant fix it until next tuesday!
Cool, will look for one online now.

2 x 8mm bolts and 2 x plugs you cannot get on wrongly.
it lives on top of the airbox under that plastic trim that pulls off, seriously it takes minutes to fit TOPS

Thanks for all your help. Ordered replacement part from euro car parts... should be here tommorow all going well.
I hope to fit it tommorow after work (providing it arrives that is)
Have only kept app with garage incase the module doesn't cure the problem.

Just bringing the thread back, I have a facelift 2001 b5 1.8t and I am getting slightly rough idling, plugged in to vag com and showing misfires on cylinder 2, swapped the plugs bkr6e and the coil packs round but the misfires intermittently still there, I was going to have a look at the ignition module but its not on top of the airbox, I can see where it would mount but its missing, were facelifts different?

My 2000 facelift has/Had it on top of the airbox. (had to relocate for the new airfilter) :D

2001 A4's got the AWM engine which has amongst other things 06A block, ME7.5 ECU with Wideband lambda, and four individually amped coils, hence no amp on top of the airbox.

i had this issue and it was a engine speed sensor

Did you suffer from a slightly lumpy idle as well? It also doesn't seem to be pulling that well either, checked and replaced most vac hoses, put a Bailey recirc valve on, changed plugs, its also recently had a new genuine Bosch maf, when plugged into vagcom it hunts between 760-800rpm so I might try the speed sensor as suggested. By the way it's not showing and fault codes either!
