Hi guys I hope someone can help me as this is driving me crazy! I have a 2000my A4 & I want to remove just the outer door handle covers to paint them. Apparently you have to push out a locking bar which retains the cover to the handle & then the cover just pulls off the two clips from the lower part of the door handle. I just cannot see where this locking bar is? Any help would be welcomed.

lift up the handle and look at the end (usually covered when closed), you will see a small square hole.
you need a long thin screwdriver to insert and unclip the catch inbetween the metal back of the handle and the plastic front trim.

IIRC you do it from one end rather than both ends.
bit fiddly but they come away.

and in true Haynes book of lies style "refit is the reversal of removal".....

I'll get my coat

Marvellous! Thanks at last someone who "agrees" that they can be removed!

The small square holes on my handles are solid. There is nothing 'inside' them.

Has anyone successfully managed to remove their door handle covers without breaking anything?

Its a long plastic strip with raised strips to help keep in place. Once pushed out far enough you can pull out the other side. I fitted one new one and removed others to sand down and re paint as they corrode the little squares on the bottom of the handle can break.
Quite easy to remove though
