So when I bought my car I was under the impression that the timing belt had been changed. Well 4 months after I have the car, at 90,000 miles my timing belt snaps. I guess it bent all the valves and the entire top end of my engine had to be rebuilt and ended up costing 4 grand. So my advice, get your timing belt changed and know when it was done prior to buying a car!!!!!!!!

Mine has done 67k Audi recon that it needs changeing at 80k so i would get it changed like now whats 350 quid for a new cam belt, when it can cost thousands.

Sorry to hear that JetSpeed mate.

Good point Markey - they RECOMMEND a limit but if it goes earlier out of warranty Audi would probably not be too interested in paying for it... Got mine done at 55K when I got the car just to be safe.

I got mine done at 58K miles just to be safe also. Now when is the next time I need to change the timing belt? 100K, 120K, or 150K ???

Guys,

I am looking at changing my timing belt ealry (car has done 61,000), of which it will hopefully be next weekend . However whilst changing the timing belt I am wondering what else is worth changing at the same time i.e Hydraulic Tensioner & Water Pump etc. I am interested to see your views on this and what you guys went for with yours.

Sorry to hear that. Years ago I had a belt break on an Opel Omega (2-litre petrol engine)- it should have been changed but hadn't been, because of a mixup in the service record book. Fortunately, the Opel engine was one in which the valves and pistons don't overlap, so it didn't do any damage. But I've been nervous about timing belts ever since.

Do a search on this as has come up many times- basicly on the A4 it depends on the engine you have-on some the timing belt and water pump are linked, on others they are not.

This is topical for me, as mine is on 67K, and I've just started thinking about when i should have the belt changed, and who should do it. I've had a quote from my dealer for £679, all in, including 5 hours labour at £89 +VAT per hour. My local independent reckons they will charge me about £220 for labour, to do it, plus the cost of the parts. So I asked the dealer for a list of the parts included in the quote, and this is what they gave me. It's written in gobbldegook, so if anyone can transalate & tell me what these part descriptions mean and which price I actually pay, I'd be most grateful.

Part Qty Unit Price Net Total

M A078 109 243 R 31C7 9101896ROL 1 £29.45 £17.35
M A078 109 244 H 31D3 RELAYROLLR 1 £28.45 £17.00
M A078 109 479 E 31D6 BELT DAMPR 1 £76.90 £51.33
M A078 109 119 H 35C3 5502253BEL 1 £35.00 £20.63
M A078 109 487 A N/STK LEVER 1 £24.74 £15.34

Hope someone can help.

I'm in the same boat as Jeff. Just with a 1.8T. Have done 68k and am looking at getting the cam belt changed on the 70k service. I am getting the service done at the stealer to get the stamp in the book, but will probably get the belt done elsewhere, at a decent independant specialist. Anyone know how much I should be looking at on a 1.8T, or know any decent independants around the Bristol area?

Guys, in my opinion it's not worth the money paying for a dealer stamp on a car that's over 5 years old. Send the car to a specialist with a good rep, the car will still be worth the same when you come to sell it on.

Jeff I don't have Etka so I can't give exact descriptions but I've a fair idea what each one is;

A078 109 243 R 31C7 9101896ROL 1 £29.45 £17.35
Roller - a guide wheel for the belt, it'll be plastic for that price,

M A078 109 244 H 31D3 RELAYROLLR 1 £28.45 £17.00
Another roller or 'idler' pulley for the belt,

M A078 109 479 E 31D6 BELT DAMPR 1 £76.90 £51.33
Automatic spring loaded belt tensioner (takes up the slack as the belt stretches over time,

M A078 109 119 H 35C3 5502253BEL 1 £35.00 £20.63
That's the belt itself,

M A078 109 487 A N/STK LEVER 1 £24.74 £15.34
No idea!

TBH those prices sound very reasonable.

All my work gets done at Woodward Motors its a Porsche specialist, so I figured they would be ok, I have been using them for about 5 years now.

They are at rockhampton, which is near oldbury power station / Thornbury, they dont charge stupid money for servicing, fixed price 150 quid inc plugs etc, and they will do your timing belt, i'm in work so dont have the number to hand, but speak to Brian hes a real nice chap

Cheers Ronny

Will look them up.

well jetspeed me thinks u were majorly ripped off matey! Same thing happend to me, bought it at 86k and belt went at 92k, similar damage to urs but i got a local garage to do the work and it cost a little ova £500!

Had mine replaced in holland a couple of weeks ago, when the water pump went. Belt, tensioners, water pump and labour at a vw dealer was 400 euros.
