I have a crack in the offside (drivers side) rear light cluster, Have the new unit now. Does anyone know how to change these it looks quite strange design

Remove the inner carpet or access panel cover. Remove bulb holder. Undo 4 8mm nuts (iirc) remove unit carefully releasing safety retaining clips. Should be able to do it in less than 20 minutes including a cuppa. If your new lense doesn't have the foam seal you will need to swap it over from your old unit. As Mr Haynes says "Refitment is the reverse of removal"
