When Control Arms are gone?

What are the signs of the control arms or bushings going at the front? My car is 1999 A4 1.9 TDI. Are there any checks I can do to determine what state they are in? The car is running well with no vibrations or creaks at the front, this is just for my own interest.

both mine went upper and lower,
mine knocked on pot holes .
if you jack the car up get a long screw driver and lever the bars at the bush you see the play.
thats what i done anyway.
