Vent removal

In my A4 (2000) a strip of black fabric is gradually emerging from the dashboard, at the upper edge of the frame around the central air vent. It isn't doing any harm, but it looks ridiculous. I can't pull it out, and I can't push it back in.

I suspect I will have to remove the actual vent, but I can't see any obvious way of doing this - I don't want to pull it out by brute force in case I break something.

Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

I had this all you need to do is carefully pull the front of the vent out by the top by only a few CM and it will come out if you are gentle. Then just push the material back in...
