What sort of price should I pay for a cam belt/water pump change for a 2000 S4. My local specialist has quoted £590.00 !

My nearest dealer has quoted £460.00 (yes thats right dealer was cheaper then specialist?)

Wanna get it done soon (before xmas), so any advice appreciated..

i would go to the specialist rather than stealer TBH got my v6 done at mastertechs was abit of a trek but worth it, its around that sort of price, i got tensioner, cambelt, water pump, thermostat all done.

There was quite a long list of parts the specialist said they would change, think it included tensioner etc,,when you say its around that sort of price you mean £590 ish Ras?

IIRC mine was around £500 all in might be slightly less was a few years ago TBH. IMHO i would go with recommendation im sure someone knows a specialist in your area?

Make sure the dealer price is including the water pump, they have a habit of not doing it unless you specifically specify it. They tend to say they checked it and it's fine etc, despite you asking them.

Anyway, ramblings. anything sub £500 is considered a good price for belt, WP, and associated tensioners

ok thanks guys, it looks they aren't too far away then..
I'll probably will go with the specialist, but have asked them to shave a bit off the price...they are gonna get back to me..

the cambelt was done on mine at about 65k miles and from what i can tell they only changed the belt.

by 115k the stat was screwed, the timing belt tensioning roller was screwed, the ribbed belt tensioning roller was screwed and so was the timing belt tensioner.

i replaced the lot, including pulley bolts and all with the best bits i could lay my hands on for a reasonable price.

at the age of our cars, id just be concerned about everything being replaced and what its being replaced with because its not something you want to be doing twice, especially if youre paying someone else the labour cost.

c.£250 included the new fluids too... must remember to take back the old water pump!

I agree Matt, I will get as much done as possible in one go, I do suspect the dealer didn't include all the 'other' bits as you have stated, whereas the specialist covered all these (i think)..

Man don't pay £590 thats way to much I done my one for £370 if you near London I can sort you out if you want.

Hey thanks for the offer, but i'm miles away, would cost me the difference ion fuel...LOL.....

So was your £370 parts only?

Woops Im paying £625 but thats including Vat water pump and thermostat, they have also lent me a golf td thats saved me £30 so far on fuel!

from other posts on here, thats about normal tbh. the cost of the parts alone is almost half of that if everything is being replaced and its not a straight forward job at all

My local dealer (Tetbury Audi) offers cambelt change on cars over 3 years for £329 includin parts (doubtful of water pump though)... Not sure if other dealers do this, or if your car is over 3 years old... But thought I'd pipe up anyway! :)

The dealers are all scum though, and will likely replace the absolute bare minimum of components for that money.

Doubtless the tensioner will be unchanged, they'll probably leave all the idlers on there too.

Includes tensioners and idlers. I asked :)

i wouldnt be my money on all the bits being changed, but id happily be proven wrong.

youd have be to be mad not to do the cambelt but miss out the rollers, water pump and stat.

whilst youre there you may as well change the ribbed belt roller, which you cannot buy individually for the s4 so have to spend £50 on the tensioner too.

Phoned audi back to query their original price and it only included the following:

Cambelt
Waterpump

didn't include :

Aux belt
Tensioners
Thermostat

once these little beauty's were added on cost rose to £820.41

So i'm gonna re-check with the specialist and if their cost DID include all of the above for £590.00 i'll book them..

the first cambelt change on mine was done by AMD. as far as i could tell, all the did was change the belt

the tesioner roller was dead on both the ribbed and toothed belt and the stat was dead too. the dead rollers were making whirring noises and the stat was causing it to never warm up fully.

they dont include the tensioners, but it doesnt appear they include the rollers either, hence the cost mounts up. theyre almost £50 a pop.

I only needed my T stat as Im only 50k into belts but it all makes sence to do the lot!

exactly the same here. i think i was 56k miles into the new belt, but the stat needed doing so did the lot. the rollers were a mess and making a lot of noise anyway.

so happy overall with your car?

when i saw your car there was a fair old boost leak going into the near side intercooler

lovely car though

Yes the F Hose has been done and something else and got a clean bill of health from MRC a short time ago, overall very happy.

having re read the spec on yours i admit im jealous. i really want cruise control in an attempted to get the mpg sensible on the motorway. yours has the lowering springs i want, has the ally mirrors... recaros, symphony blah blah blah

but if id plan to out bid you and then do all the other work id have pushed my budget to the edge and wouldnt have been so happy.

fecking ace car though... that was the only other one that i did get my heart set on

but i think i also read it was a world of grief sitting on your head in passenger footwell trying to wire it on all?

Well unfortunatly for me while I was bidding just before the auction end I got 3 more points on my licence, im now on 9 points (6 in 08) whilst it doesnt effect my insurance at the moment its likely to in May when renewal comes up, Ive fitted a parking sensor as cough a precaution, but have said to my self if the insurance company attempts to rape me,(as few like modified group 20 cars) im going to have to look at getting something borring ,economical & cheaper to insure, so Im making the most of her for now. So will let you know nearer the time.

i can live without yours, promise! one S4 is headache enough

Morning,

If your cambelt was done here at AmD Essex then we would always change the tensioners and rollers.

Ben

hi Ben, it wasnt your thurrock branch

scarily they didnt appear to have 6mm allen bits to get the crank pulley off either and hammered a t45 bit on instead. same with the pas pulley

the remap seems ay'okay though. quick question whilst youre here, i remember hearing in the past that with amd remaps, are updated to the software provided free of charge?

Hi I'm in Surrey, can you still get it done for 370 all in?
