I have noticed recently that after a run my power steering pump starts to make a quite a loud noise. Question is will a fluid change quieten this noise down or am i just going to have to wait until it packs in altogether and fit a new pump? Second question how easy is the pump to change?

Have you checked your PAS fluid level?
It's the tank near the front right in the engine bay.
Low level will result in horrible noises. Make sure you use VAG mineral oil, not generic fluid from Halfords.

Andy > Yeah level is fine, but im not sure how old the fluid may be.

On a 96 it probably is the pump on its way out, mine is starting to go on my 97. It's not too expensive, about £250 fitted. Unfortunately I doubt it's just the condition of the oil.

is that an original Audi pump fitted by audi? Is that new or replacement?

My steering soemtimes goes a little heavy, sometimes I wonder if my pump is getting weak. Its never noisy though.

No that was an Audi specialist fitting an OEM part. £80/hour to fit a steering pump, I don't think so.
