A4 instrument Clocks backlighting?

Hi all, I have an A4 1996 p reg tdi estate. One annoying problem is the instrument lights at night only seem to light up in the middle making it hard to rear outer guages and speedo etc. I am assuming there are a series of bulbs behind however it seems strange that the far left and right side of the clocks are in darkness. The illuminated section in the middle works on the dimmer/brighter switch just fine.

Any ideas why the outer areas are in darkness???

Earlier cars have bulbs that are available from the dealer only IIRC due to them being a funny wattage.
