    Run Flat tyres

    Opinions please....

    I'm thinking of getting a set of these as my tyres (on the front) are shot; mind you its not due to having any tread as there is still 6 to 7mm, its due to the inside walls crumbling!!! Not happy or impressed.

    Apparently trying to get them replaced under warranty is impossible!!

    So i am looking at options:-

    1. Thinking of going with the F1 Assyms
    2. Looking at run flat (thought the idea of safety with having these especially when doing some brisk driving )

    Not sure if this or similar has been done... sorry if it has, did a quick search but couldn't find anything.

    Do you know why your existing tyrewalls had crumbled?? Sounds dodgy!

    I've got the Asymms and they are excellent. They've certainly outperformed my nerves.

    Not sure i'd bother with run flats. The risk of a tyre blowout is very small. You've got to ask yourself if the benefit outweighs the negatives, eg:Price, weight, etc.

    I had on my Astra a set of 4 Bridgestone Turanza 300 ER. They were run flat. quite good tires. Not very sporty (they were slipping easy at hard accelerations) but very resistant. I had them ~35.000 KM an they were at about 50% wear. They were also noisy.

    Blue Thunder - No idea as to why they are crumbling. Thought it originally was rubbing somewhere, but there are no signs of rubbing. Had three seperate specialists (tyre and tuning) have a look and they all said there was a manufacturing fault!! Conti 3's by the way. They all said you'll get no joy by sending them back to the manufacturer as they'll come up with several excuses as to why its happened ie. under/over inflated etc. Was thinking about the prices and more importantly the extra weight (slow me down ).

    Johnny Bravo - Don't like the idea of them slipping under hard acceleration nor the idea of them being noisy.

    Have heard of good reports on the Assyms.

    I thought the concesous on Runflats was they didn't communicate well with the driver and they are very noisey. I have read somewhere about people actually changing them on new cars as they hated them that much.

    I have not run any myself, and it was a little while ago, so it's possible they have improved

    Indeed run flat tires are noisy.

    Mmmm seems like i'll get the Assyms then. Only noises i want to hear is the chat of the turbos and the exhuast .

    no idea if this works, but i was told that on cars putting a lot of power down the side wall flex and can lead to edge wear. and to reduce this to buy tyres with a stonger side wall. stiffer side wall is reflected in the load rating ( the number such as 90 OR 91 ...near the size). like i said i have no idea if this will work. but i did find when i last changed mine that the same tyre can sometimes be found with more than one load rating. I used to just look at size and speed rating. but some of the tyres for our cars that are 91 load rating can also be bought in 94. cetainly I found both gooodyear eagles asy and uniroyles rainsport 2 can be specified with both these load ratings when i bought my last tyres. the higher load rating of 94 (so i am told0) which means a stiff side wall, so less flexing and less chance of a blister too.. nothing at all to do with run flat, but may help...???

    waste of money imo , i know quite a few that have had them on and they all changed to good normal tyres after the warranty of the cars ran out

    My father has spent many years in tyre research and TBH I wouldn't bother with run flats. The downsides seem to out weight the ups with a noisy and harsh ride. I'll stick to having a spare wheel thanks

    I missed it on tv, but didnt watchdog do something on BMWs not being fit for Surrey roads,because of run flat tyres?

    I am not fit to type. Mrs is out. Leaving me with a bottle of red and a garage full of cold strong continental lager. Recipe for disaster.

    Sun and Kath - thanks for the extra info. My tyres are rated at 91, so i'll have a look into the 94 varient.

    Oranoco & SDMonkey - thanks. Seems to be the gerneral consensous on run flat. Won't be going with them then.

    7 - can of Tyre weld. may piss the monkeys off at quikfit but saves you if you really get stuck.
    as for run flats....they don't work! had them, had a flat, followed guideline speed and everything and it came off the rin and destroyed itself and teh rim.

    get some decent tyres. IMO goodyear F1 GSD3 or Assym or Michelin PS2 are the best I have used (michelins if you can afford them!)

    Cheers jcb. Cost isn't too much of a problem so it was going to be a toss of a coin between the michelins and the f1 assyms. One thing i have noticed with the Assyms is that the tyre size that i have they don't seem to have anything higher than a 91 loading, not sure about the michelins yet.

    In my boot is a can of Tyre weld and has been for some time, just in case.
