Are there any problems putting 1998 tail lights into a 1996? I know there shouldn't be any fitment problems, but is the electrical direct plug and play or is there something that needs to be done? Thanks.

If you go on audiworld tech articles it will tell you for a US A4.

Easiest way is to look at the circuit and see if the tracks line up to the same pin for each bulb. If not, just swap the wires over.

I think I read somewhere that if you pick up a set of 98 bulb holders you can just plug the wiring over.

Can anyone comfirm/correct me?

all depends, the 96-98 have the same bulb holders (the red and amber with a square in the lower middle). But if you are talking about the 98.5 tails (red with reverse towards the top then you have to buy a different bulb holder. The same goes with the 99.5+. The 98.5-2001.5 all have the same holders.
