I've been having intimitant starting problems over the last few months on me A4 Avant 1.8T Sport, but the problem is getting worse.

When I start the car, it runs for about a second and then cuts out. As time has gone on, I've noticed that if I turn the ignition on, the immobiliser light comes on. If this light starts flashing, I know that its not gonna start. If i keep repeating this process, eventually the light goes out and stays out, then i know that the car will start and stay running, hope your still with me on this!!

There seems to be no consistency with the problem, 1 week it will do it loads and then i can go a month before it happens again.

I spoke to a bloke who had a A4 TDi and he had the same problem. He mentioned something to do with an inductance cable behind the dash switch goes faulty of over time. I didn't really understand what he was talking about though.

Has anyone had this problem?? Does anyone know of a solution and how much it would cost cos its beginning to get on my tits!!!

Thanks alot

Phil.

It certainly sounds like something to do with the immobiliser. Does it do the same thing with the spare key?

It could be the immobiliser pickup which is usually a length of wire (the aerial) that is in behind the plastic panel where the key goes, it could be that this has become broken somehow hence shortening the aerial and the immobiliser isn't seeing the key going in the ignition, worst case see an alarm specialist.
