    v6 30 valve thermostat replacement

hi all i cant put it off any longer as there seems to be a bit of a nip in the air and i need to replace the thermostat on my t reg 2.8 30 valve quattro i know its behind the timing belt (stupid design) but i was wondering if it is possible to replace it without removing the belt . i dont realy want to replace the belt because the last owner had it done less than 30000 miles ago do you know of any garages that would take on this job in the greater manchester area or have any of you actually done this and can pass on a few tips any information would be very much appreciated

Yes you should be able to get the thermostat housing of with out removing the belt. All you need to do is slaken the tensioner when you come to remove the house.

I did this myself after the garage I gave it to spent 45mins trying to find the damn thermostat!!

You don't have to remove the timing belt, just edge it forward so it is half off the cogs. Elsawin says that you just need to have the front end in 'service mode', but I found that too difficult as there is very little room to manouvre. I thought I had finaly done it and put it all together, then the last job is to top up the fluids when I found a drip drip drip noise

This time I undid a few more hoses on the front and opened the panels out so I could get a good pull on the belt to get more room. This made it alot easier to remove the cover and place the 'O' ring correctly.

Nothing technical, just lots of nuts, bolts and hoses to deal with. Personally I would suggest you take a weekend and do it yourself or take it to a VAG specialist who won't charge you for standing there scratching his head trying to figure out how to do it.

You will notice a big difference in how quick the engine warms up after and it should also improve your fuel consumption.
