    A creaking steering wheel

    Hi guys,

I need more help from you B5 experts. Since I bought the car (2000 S4 Avant) the steering has creaked slightly first thing in the morning but after a few miles its then been fine. Now its creaks constantly. The creak seems to come from just behind the steering wheel.

I asked audi and they, just by looking - didn't plug it in, say the steering sensor is on the way out and offered to fix it for just short of 250!!

Can I buy this part from the likes of Andrew Pages and sort or is it audi only. Secondly is it likely to be the sensor creaking? I was tempted to take the wheel off to have a look but I searched this forum and was put off by people saying about having to get a vaccom to reset and delete fault codes. Would this be the case?

    Thanks for any help.
    Andy

Thanks for that info. I feel a little better that nothing is going wrong but its driving me mad.

I think I might bite the bullet and pull the wheel off and give it a dose of looking at, see if I can solve it. Is there anything I need to be aware of, I've heard talk of a clock spring that I don't like the sound of.

Incidently are all the audi wheels the same fitment. The new flat bottomed (think its the RS4/6 and R8) ones look very good. I'm sure I've seen that someone on here has put one of these on a B5?

What exactly does this "Steering Sensor" do then?!

The later wheels have a two stage airbag, most people when they fit them just wire up the "high" stage, and leave the low one disconnected. This might work, but imo it depends how the airbag is designed, ie it might be designed such that the "low" bag fires for gentle impacts and both fire for heavy ones, in which case just wiring up the "high" bag might have rather unexpected results. I guess no-ones put the money into testing it so its all a bit of a question mark.

That would be me then! There are some question marks as to the airbag as Aragon says, it's all in here:
