    VAG COM fault codes - help please?

    Whileat Inters on Sunday, two very nice gentlemen (Mark and Lee, with the occasional appearance of the 'hot' Purple Princess!) hooked my semi-poorly Sport up to their VAG COM. My symptom is that while pushing relatively hard, the boost shuts off and it turns into 'limp mode' - a simple 'ignition off-ignition on' soves the problem.

    Anyway, it threw up quite a few codes...only two of which were relevant (after checking VAGCOM WIKI files)... as follows:

    FAULT 1

    17964/P1556 - Charge Pressure Control: Negative Deviation


    Possible Symptoms
    • Reduced power output
    • Limp mode
    Possible Causes
    • Boost Pressure too Low
    • Hoses/Pipes incorrect connected, disconnected or leaking
    • Charger Pressure Control defective
      • VNT (variable nozzle turbo): nozzles stuck
    • Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75) defective
    Possible Solutions
    • Check Hoses/Pipes to/between Components
    • Check Solenoid Valve for Boost Pressure Control (N75)
    • Check / Clean / Replace Charge Pressure Control
      • Check / Clean mechanism for variable nozzles
    FAULT 2

    01237 - Fuel Shut-off Valve (N109)

    Possible Symptoms
    • Limp mode
    • MIL
    Possible Causes
    • Wiring and/or connections faulty
    • N109 faulty
    Possible Solutions
    • Check wiring and connections
    • Check/replace N109
    The first fault code... I've already replaced the N75... twice, with no positive effect. The next thing I will check are the intake / turbo pipes for leaks or cracks... I might swap them all out for silicone replacements. Then finally, I'll check the Charge Pressure Control and look for variable nozzles(?) - if I know what and where that was. Any pointers please?

    The second fault code... replacing the N109 - which part is this?

    Any further help or advice would be GREATLY appreciated!

    I think the N109 is a fuel shutoff solenoid from a diesel engine... Ie your car doesnt have one.

    You sure thats the right fault code?

    The Charge pressure fault could be a bad remap, or a duff AFM, possibly a collapsing intake hose. Its basically saying its asking for a certain amount of boost pressure, and not getting it. Which either means the remap is simply asking for more than the turbo can possibly provide, or the turbo IS providing it but the AFM isnt registering this fact properly (B5 A4's dont have boost sensors, its all done on the AFM)

    Your car doesnt have variable nozzles either. Again thats a derv thing.

    Can you post up the actual vagcom output?

    We wrote the codes down direct from Lee's hand held scanner, they were P codes.

    Like was said at inter mate, you need to blast her and see what comes back

    The 1237/8/9/40 codes that we got (referring to the 4 sparks)... there are no 'P' numbers on the WIKI site... that's why I used the non-P number.

    So... likely candidates are either a hole/split/collapse in the intake pipes, a duff re-map or a faulty MAF...?

    Hang on... got a further fault code (got the P number this time!) - The N80 valve is the one we spoke about yesterday on the top of the air filter box...?

    17834/P1426/005158 - EVAP Purge Valve (N80): Open Circuit

    Possible Symptoms
    • Malfunction Indicator Light (MIL) active
    Possible Causes
    • EVAP Purge Valve (N80) faulty
    • Wiring/Connectors from/to EVAP Purge Valve (N80) faulty
    • Fuel Pump Relay (J17) faulty
    Possible Solutions
    • Check EVAP Purge Valve (N80)
    • Check Wiring/Connectors from/to EVAP Purge Valve (N80)
    • Check Fuel Pump Relay (J17)

    I'd get a proper vagcom lead and use that. Surprised you didnt have the laptop with you at the show Mark!

    As he says though, you need to reset them and see what comes back.

    Sorry Geeman, was being lazy about not writing the P codes as i knew i needed to add them, but it didnt occur to me to tell you,lol

    Look on Wiki using the P codes and we can go from there. Like we sadi some of them could have been stored from previous problems and the faults rectified without the ECU being cleared.

    Give her a good run, and steal a lappy to see what comes back

    I did Kev, but the Mrs was surfing with it and she was very hot and bothered so i didn't want to steal it back,lol

    Will rob a laptop tonight and see what I can do with it.

    It 'limped' on the way home while playing with friends Mk1 Golf 1.8T... so at least I know the fault should be there when I hook it up.

    How much are the VAG COM readers like Lee had? And where can I get one? Would be useful as Rach has a TT as well.

    Around 30 on the 'bay i believe. Handy for leaving in the car as an extra tool to work alongside Vagcom. Vagcom will do a lot more than just do fault codes, logging, coding keys etc

    Hmmm... seem to be having trouble hooking the laptop up to the car. It confirms there's a connection, and it tries all the 'addresses' but comes up blank at the end of it.

    Having no instructions with the VAG COM software/lead makes things a little harder!

    Will have another shot at it tonight.
