Hi all!
I know this problem is a frequent one and Ive already read and tried the sollutions, but I need help or else I'll put an axe through it.

Ive had an auto '96 A4 B5 for a few years now and it intermittently goes through the stalling at low idle problem. About a year ago it got to the point of being unable to change into any gears from Park without it dying. I finally found a guy that said he changed MAF, cleaned throttle body and shook up some carbon filter thing. Something he did got it going for 6 months and it was back to its incredible self again, but the problem is now back.

The problem is more frustrating because its not consistent. Some days its fine and drives like an Audi is meant to drive. Then others its an absolute pain in the butt and stalls or attempts to stall everytime I slow down for a corner or an intersection.

Ive just had it looked at again, by a supposed audi specialist, and its obvious that they are stumped too. Theyve put it down to the gearbox and asked for $6,000, thank you very much, for a recon trans.

If it was consistent I would be more open to it being the trans, but its not and it worked beautifully for about 6 months without a problem. Its as if the rpms drop down too low and then it stalls. When the problem first started again it was dropping but it seemed that the ECU or something was overriding it and getting it back up again to prevent it stalling. Now it drops and just dies again. If I keep my foot on gas and brake at same time and keep revs up I can get through it, but it shudders and complains and Im afraid that I might be doing damage to it.

I really do love this car and I dont want to either get rid of it or get another trans only to find the problem is still there.

I know that a lot of you have seen posts on this before, and many have replied and helped others out. Please, if anyone can help. Ive spent so much money on this car already. Id love to find the specific problem and fix it once and for all!

Thanks in advance for any help!

My last A4 did this and that was the MAF. When yours was changed was a genuine Bosch unit used or a Pierburg. The pierburgs by all accounts are a utter **** for these cars. Get yourself an aerosol of carb or electrical contact cleaner and remove teh filter and spray the MAF wire with it (ignition off) and allow to dry. If the problem goes away again it's your MAF. Do you run any sport of aftermarket filter as preoiled filters can cause fouling of the MAF

Does it idle when first started?
what does it do if you blip teh throttle when parked. smooth rev and roll back to steady idle, or does it bounce all over the place?

what happens if you slip into neutral and back into gear when moving? Same problem as park to drive?

if it was the transmission your symptoms would not have been temporarily removed by the clean up and MAF.
easiest way to test if it is your MAF is to unplug it!
start car, unplug MAF, see what the engine idle does.

first things first, what engine is it?

Bad Audi,

What fuel are you putting into your car? i had a similar fault, and it was down to poor fuel and the filter getting clogged up?

Today all i use is BP or Shell.
