    Bought some wheels

    After owning my car for almost 4 years now and have been meaning to get some decent wheels for it to replace the standard 16's I finally bought some.
    They are some 18" 8.5j A8/A6 five spokes or fat fives as they are otherwise know.
    Had to get them from german ebay as they appear to be like flies on rocking horse $**te over here!
    They are E45 offset will they need spacers? and will 225/40 tyres fit on 8.5j or will they be a bit streched?
    Will post some pics once I have got them on

    You MIGHT need some 10mm spacers on the rear. I'm also guessing they're going to be REALLY close the front uprights too... so just be aware of that.

    I'm running ET45's on mine, but only 8's all round. I went for 215's to give me a bit more clearance!

    Get some pics of the wheels up though... they sound interesting.

    Tyres should be fine had the same size on my old 2.8Q but if they are A8 rims you will need spacers.

    Yeah... the ET is quite high, meaning spacers (as I had to do).

    yeah I've been looking into spacers, was thinking about 15mm on the rear and maybe 10mm on the front. found the website motorsportworld.co.uk seems pretty reasonable for spacers. They sell the extended bolts as well. But would I need radius or tapered?
    Its only on stock sport suspension so I will probably have to get it lowered a bit aswell. gonna be an expensive month good job I have got a new credit card to put it all on.
    Heres a picture of them.


    the tyres on there are 255/40 and I think they might cause a few issues so they'll be straight off! anyone want them?

    I have been after some ever since I saw them on this thread 17" A8 diamond cut 5 spokes...

    The wheels arrived today! they look alot bigger in the flesh
    now have to wait till next week for the tyres and spacers which could be 7-10 days!!! going to have the tyres that are on them taken off tomorrow and then probably list them on ebay as they still have a fair amount of tread left on them, and two off the alloys have kerb damage on them so might take them to get a refurb

    Well I put one wheel on to check the clearance and it is very tight.



    bit of a rushed job as my hayfever was playing up.
    some goodyear f1's arrived yesterday so just waiting on the spacers now!! 7-10 days as they aren't stock items! I hate waiting for things

    I've got some 225/40r18 for 97 each. 215 would probably be too small round my way as the roads are horrible, pot holes everywhere!

    225's are pushing it on 8.5" rims tbh.

    Audi fitted the 8.5" RS4 rims with 255/35's and those wheels on the A8 were probably fitted with 245/45's or something.

    I had some B5 RS4's that were 8.5 wide, one had a 225/35/18 tyre on, it was fine. no problems at all, even on the naff cambridgeshire country roads... if it wasn't for the offsets i'd still be running them. so they should be fine.

    the tyre on the left is a 225 on a 8.5 wheel, and a 255 on the right:



    it just means you get a nice bit of stretch but to much for bad roads.

    love the wheels mate, been looking for a set for mine for a while, they always seem to come up when im skint...

    that doesnt look too bad, better than i expected, but a 235 would sit a bit nicer on the rim and give the rim a bit more protection.

    Cheers Jimmy you have put my mind at rest a bit, i'll have to let you know if i come to sell them

    Having the tyres fitted tomorrow so i'll take a proper pic with my camera. a bit of stretch will be alright but I will be very nervous round curbs. two of the wheels have a bit of curb damage anyway. I am going to run them for a while and then in a few months maybe get them refurbed, but its just to see how they go and if any more damage appears first.

    aragorn they did have 255/40/18's on when i got them

    There's a set on Ebay at the moment that I've got my eye on... up to 200 at the moment with just over a day to go...

    I'm running 215's on my current 18's... just gotta be careful. I would hope you were a better driver around curbs than that anyway!

    typical just as I get some so others pop up!!

    well I am careful round curbs except for when I am in my landy when it doesn't really matter.

    Only place curbs will be a problem is on my drive where the sloped curbstones don't line up and where i work the entrance to the industrial estate the road has sunk and the kerb is sticking up by an inch in the middle.. not sure what we pay council tax for!

    Well I picked up the wheels from the tyre place on my way home from work today so i thought i'd do a trial fit one on the front and one on the back.
    and to my suprise they fitted with no clearance issues

    Front


    Back


    The clearance isn't much but it isn't touching. So I am not sure that I need spacers, I took it out of a drive and it didn't rub at all. I did have a bit of a shock as because of the slight tyre stretch the balancing weight flew off as i drove down the road.

    They sit quite far out in the arch as it is so it would be sticking out with spacers.








    I do need to lower it a bit. but i do need new springs anyway as when I was putting the wheels on I discovered this on the nearside rear


    So I am really pleased with them. I don't think I need the 15mm spacers on the rear anymore and the front wheels don't even rub on full lock.

    so what do you think?

    Look fine to me, as you say, leave the spacers well alone. It could have dont with a bit more tyre, but then you'll be even closer on the clearance.

    The tyre cant get any closer to the suspension arm, as it moves with the wheel, so no worries about the clearance you do have

    Does need lowered a little. 30mm would do it a treat. Time to buy yourself an eibach pro-kit.

    looks fantastic, i bloody love theese wheels but have never seen them for sale in the UK! my favorite A4 is a blue american one rocking a set of theese and its extremely low!

    your quite local to me, i should cruise down to the new-forest to get some pics of our cars together?

    H&R race kit, -40mm is what you want. the eibachs are only 10mm lower than stock sport springs!

    although it looks like yours is a non-sport, so i dont know how well the dampers will keep up with any lowering spring.

    EDIT: looking again, maybe it is a sport? most 2.8 quattys seem to be.

    Cheers guys, drove it into work today and it doesn't tramline and considering it has no wheel balancing weights on no woble!

    Yeah I do need to lower it a bit although its not as high as I thought it was going to be.

    nick yeah your wheels look great to, you should come down! where abouts are you?
    That blue american one was my favorite as well until I put some on my car

    I had to get the wheels from germany as they never seem to come up in the uk and no one does replicas. which I think is a good thing makes mine a bit unique.

    Mine is a sport, How much was your H&R kit? a mate of mine reckons he can get me coilovers for 280 but I don't really think I need coilovers as I would never get round to changing the hight anyway and I always think if you pay cheap you get cheap

    mine was 204 i think for the springs, but i would consider the coilies as its highlighted that my 85k 9year old sport dampers are not really up to the job any more! although it still MOT'd fine a few days ago.

    mines now sporting yellow fog lamps, as per 'that' car. just need to sort a better exhaust on mine and externally its pretty much done, except for tidying up a few bits and bobs.

    a couple of my mates, including my self to some extent are into photography and would probably jump at the chance to do a shoot with two simular modified cars (18" factory wheels, lowerd)

    im in petersfield, on the A3.

    I know i bang on about this, but i would not entertain a set of 300 coilovers on my car. 300 suspension kits are marginal enough.

    If your going to fit some suspension do it properly. Get yourself some decent shocks (Koni/Bilstein etc) and mate them up with some good springs. I quite like the eibachs from craigs S4. They feel "OEM+" rather than than the usual harsness that comes with crappy lowering kits. Its slightly stiffer than stock, but still rides as you would expect an Audi to ride, rather than crashing around like a slammed mk2 golf. You only need 10 or 20mm over the standard sport ride height to turn it from looking like a tractor to it looking spot on, and without making it scrape over every bump.

    Yeah petersfield isn't a million miles away. I just need to lower mine and clean it first..

    my body work has seen better days and needs a bit of touching up. big old stone chip on the bonnet and some one keyed it and a bit of rust showing on the rear wheel arch where its had a bit of a bodge repair at some point.

    You should get a milltek exhaust they are about 500 delivered sound lovely and are quiet on the motorway.

    aragorn, I agree with you about cheap suspension. what I want to do is get some decent lowering springs on and then get some new oem shocks I reckon. I was looking at it yesterday and 20mm would lower it enough to look spot on

    I know you all hate the coil-overs I have on mine, but for 100 (second-hand) they really do have to be driven to be believed. I'm really impressed with them.

    I've had Weitec's, H&R's, Koni's, etc on other cars and the A4 does actually drive very nicely. Can't be that bad if it was used as a wedding car and the bridesmaids didn't complain!

    Your new rims do look really nice though... that other set on Ebay is up past 250 now.

    Cheers Geeman, I am well chuffed with them! they have made it look like a new car.

    now anouther set has appeared on ebay! typical that when i was looking there was none on uk ebay and now i have got a set every bugger is selling them!!

    Ended up ordering some H&R's in a moment of madness. going to stick with the shocks that are on there for now
