SO the reserve is set at 1200 and it's advertised at 1500 back west which is always going to be negotiable. Do you think I'm being optimistic? I've been looking at replacement cars and there's nothing out there for that price I'd rather have .
Talk of leather seats, 1 lady owner, etc aren't making me bite. The mondeo I might be getting will almost definately need an inlet manifold http://www.fordmondeo.org/forum/showforum.php?fid/163/ and the option of buying an unkown is not appealing. I'm dreading getting something that I regret buying, the whole point of of getting tid of the teabag is stop my bank account being a metaphore for a sieve! Anybody know of a good, trusted run about for sale?

TBH mate i think you should just keep the car you have. There really is only so much that can go wrong, and lets face it, you've replaced most of it.

Seems to me it makes sense to get another year or two from it and benefit from some of your expense.

They are excellent cars for the money, which is exactly why you cant find anything else close in the price range, plus buying another car is always an unknown quantity. You could spend 4 grand on a B6 and have some expensive issues pop up just the same.

I look at our car and the main thing thats left thats original is the engine, and doing the maths, its far more sensible for me to replace the engine should it explode, than to ditch it and buy a new car at that point, as i know the rest of the car is in good condition and all the important expensive bits like the suspension and brakes are in good condition.

I feel it depends on why one decides to sell his / her car.

If it's because an owner fancies a change, or has spotted a different car that takes his / her fancy, that's great.

If the desire to change is more due to reliability issues, then I don't think that's the right step to take.

There are no guarantees the new car will be any more reliable, and at least with the current / old car, all quirks are generally known, and most have been dealt with. With the replacement, it's like starting all over again, and doing all the repairs / niggles that have been ironed out in the older one.

Rather the devil you know, to be honest.

    I also agree.

I've just re-negotiated my contract at work. Rather than running a company Merc (yawn) I'm now driving my A4 instead, saving a shizzload on company car tax.

Will I ever replace it? Can't see myself doing that unless it gets written off. I paid a grand for it at 51k, Now has 65k on the clock and mechanically I know everything about it. Apart from a duff a/c compressor it's bang on.

If I was to sell it tomorrow I am extremely unlikely to find a car whos' history is documented, and offers me the same joys of ownership mine does. especially not for a grand. Could (probably) be a whole bag of grief.

Also, Dieselfitter:- Don't you have to apply to English Heritage for permission to sell a 245k car, owing to historical significance?

    Sounds good.

Just hope they're watching because they're serious, rather than out of mere curiousity.

Don't forget folk on this thread may be watching too...

I think it knows that it has a good home in Dieselfitter.

He ought to be getting the hint by now that he needs to keep stinky....

    244K yesterday...

Aye, not letting it go for anywhere near rhat price. (Well, not spoken to the boss yet). The cars running great just now. I can live with the rear wiper and AC, not a big fix so I may just work away at that over the summer.
The prop shaft, will need dobe before it's next MoT, new rear brakes and an advisory on the rear brake pipes to get through too. I've no probelm doing the work but the problem in the past has been fixes outwith my expertise (of which there are a quite few) and the car ending up in a garage with a huge labour bill due to siezed bits, a symptom of the mileage and ages.
I suppose if I do keep it I'll have to step up the preventative maintanence, looks like I might be around for a wee bit longer!!
Oh, yeah. Was having a rumage and found 2 rear ABS rings for a non q b5 A4. Anybody interested?
