I think ive had more hassle from this car than ive ever had with any of my previous cars.

After being up on axle stands for the past 2 1/2 weeks whilst doin g the control arms I finally got it all back together last night and decided to move the car tonight and take it for a test drive to find that the damn thing wont start. Sounds like the starter motor is spinning away and not engaging as im not even getting the engine firing, just a wheeeeeeeee sort of noise.

Where would I find the starter motor on my 2.8Q, is it easy to get to and change? Is there any benefit to cleaning and re-greasing the assembly?

I would try charging the battery first, especially as its been parked up for 2 weeks. Is the Starter the same on a 1.8t? I have a spare one of those?

Battery is showing as full charge, doesnt seem to be labouring when trying to start, its almost as though the solenoid isnt engaging the starter motor.

Not sure if the starter motors are the same but will keep it in mind though, cheers.

Whack it with a bar, or a hammer, or a hammer and a bar. It may be stuck. But if I remember starter motors 101 the circuit completes like thus
Solenoid -> Motor then engine starts. ta da! If the solenoid doesn't throw then the motor shouldnt be spinning.... or twas so on our Vitara 2.0., escort 1.1, kadett 1.3 (s!) etc.. etc..
Check the earthing to the unit incase the motor and solenoid run off a different loop, though I doubt this. Can you remove the starter and get some one to turn the car? Or test it off a spare battery?

cheers auran, any ideas how much the postage would be?

Thanks very much, tonight im going to try the 'hammer' approach just so that i can get it to the mot centre tomorrow morning but im going to have to look at replacing it soon anyway i think, past experience with starter motors hasnt been good for me and once theyve shown signs of going they havent usually lasted much longer.

Out of interest whats the easiest way of getting at the starter motor on these? through one of the wheel arches?

Erm someone might correct me (ie siena) but to get at it you have to get under the car. It's at the back of the engine where the gearbox meets the clutch/flywheel.

Not sure you can get to it from the wheel arch, as I had the entire engine out of the car when I started removing parts.

Underneath from the right hand side. You may or may not need to remove the driveshaft or engine mount to get at it, i've no idea how much room is in there.

Std Parcel would cost about £8, Vagcat shows the 2.8 and 2.6 share the same starter. Part number is either 1005821796 or 1005621796 (the numbers are really small)

So if your still interested d4mo how does £30 all in sound ?

auran: check out parcel2go.com or interparcel.com FAR better than crappy royal mail, and usually cheaper too!

Really?
P2G has a flat rate service for around £7 which i tend to use most of the time as it works for any parcel up to 25kgs and provides next day delivery most of the time (even though it says 48hours)
Royal mail might be similar in price for items at the lighter end of the scale, but their standard parcel service is *****, takes about a week and a half to arrive, and doesnt provide any tracking services. Plus the p2g service means Mr DHL collects the thing from you, saving you a trip to the post office.

^^ i second that, and if you need cover on insurance, i found you get a better deal then with Parcel Farce Via Parcel2go rather than DHL with an add on extra

Well, as odd things go, the car started fine last night 3 or 4 times, and again this morning.

Even more odd is that it actually passed its MOT which I wasnt expecting, expecially after the hassle ive had with it the past few weeks. Its just having its tracking sorted out at this afternoon.

Auroan - I'm going to see how the car runs over the next week or so and if there is any sign of the starter motor playing up then I will definitely have that one off you, but im pretty strapped for cash with all the otehr work ive had to do so hopefully it will behave itself.
